The most valuable legacy The Mother has left to humanity
The very heart of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother’s work and message was unacceptably disfigured in the Matrimandir when the so-called crystal and stand were set in place. The symbolism of the executing architects’ version presents exactly the opposite of the ‘sense’ the Mother insisted should be respected of her vision. When she insisted on a translucent globe rather than transparent, it was in order that the symbol could bear witness to the Vedic essence of their mission for the world. She stated emphatically that, ‘It is all symbolic,’ yet the architects deliberately ignored her commands and had a transparent crystal fashioned in Germany in place of the symbolically crucial translucent globe. Further, the Mother stated that she ‘saw’ the pedestal with Sri Aurobindo’s symbols (four) carved in stone. This too was deliberately and knowingly ignored by the architects and builders. Instead of stone they have created a ‘stand’ in see-through wrought iron, plated in gold. Nothing of this forms a part of the Mother’s original vision, though time and again she insisted, ‘But this is what I SAW!’ These, and indeed the entire room, have been altered, though the administration claims that what is built is ‘according to the original’. Because of this misrepresentation and its consequences for the Mother’s work, the MATRIMANDIR ACTION COMMITTEE has been formed... To ensure that the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust substantiates this true position, since it has the duty to preserve the Mother’s estate, and that records in the Ashram Archives include the complete history by way of original tapes, plans, etc., as well as the material the Matrimandir Action Committee will place at the Trust’s disposal for posterity, which will prove the conspiracy to deceive on the part of those in charge over the years and their refusal to listen to those qualified to give an opinion in these matters. 4) To highlight by articles, books, websites through the electronic media, and all other means of diffusion, the value of the Mother’s vision and the place it holds in Sri Aurobindo’s work as the most valuable legacy the Mother has left to humanity, comparable in importance to Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri. And in the process to expose through these media the truth about the architects’ revised version. matacom.com
An apparently genuine sage
Hitlerian Esotericism and the Tradition
Savitri Devi
Savitri Devi
The other institution developed around an apparently genuine sage. However it tended, already during his life, to descend to the level of an enterprise of very skilful and very lucrative exploitation. Indeed, it bought one after the other all the houses of Pondicherry that were for sale, so that it included in 1960, apart from the center where some disciples dedicated themselves to meditation, many workshops for pottery, joinery, weaving, etc, etc. ... whose products were -- and are still to -- day-sold for profit; co-educational schools, with sports classes; a university, provided with richly equipped laboratories.
This prosperity is, I am told, due mainly to the business genius of the "Mother" of the ashram -- a woman of Jewish origin, the widow of a Jew, then of a Frenchman* -- and the son that she had with her first husband. Members of the organization, full at the same time with zeal and practical direction and enjoying the confidence of these two people, are also, perhaps, persons in charge, each one following his talents. In any event, in the reception hall, where there are many photographs of the late guru and the "Mother" for sale -- large and small, for all budgets -- one is impressed by the business-like atmosphere of the place, an impression that is specified and intensified during a visit of the workshops. And one recalls, by contrast, the spiritual energy that emerges from certain writings of Aurobindo Ghosh: his Commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita, his Divine Life or his Synthesis of Yogas. There is the feeling of a deep rift between this more than flourishing organization which covers two thirds of a city of more than one hundred thousand inhabitants, and the wise one who lived there in the most complete isolation -- invisible to the crowd and even to his disciples, except for a few hours a year.
[*Mr. Paul Richard, her first husband, was called Alfassa. The "Mother," still alive when these pages were written, died since then -- in 1973 -- at 95 years of age.]
However, there is a fact which seems to me eloquent, and it is this: in the midst of this traditional civilization that is still that of India, it is precisely from these organizations -- the most secular, the most "modern," in a word the most anti-traditionalist -- that the gestures, writings, and declarations hostile to Hitlerism came.
Aurobindo Ghosh himself did not, to my knowledge, ever express a judgment "pro" or "contra" any of the great figures or the great political (or more-than-political) faiths of our time. He had definitively left action -- and what action!* -- for contemplation, and it was confined to the spiritual domain. But at the end of 1939 -- or was it 1940? -- the newspapers of Calcutta published that the "Ashram of Pondicherry" had made the colonial Government of India a gift of ten million pounds sterling "to help the British war effort." Mr. de Saint-Hilaire, known as Pavitra, secretary of the Ashram, whom I questioned on this point in 1960, answered me that he "could not say to me" if information collected and published twenty years earlier in the press of Calcutta was exact. But he told me that "that could well be," considering that Hitlerism went, according to him (and undoubtedly also according to more than one person having some influence in the ashram), "against the direction of human evolution." (Against evolution? And how! Nothing could be truer! But far from being a reason to fight it, it would be, on the contrary, a reason to support it. Universal decline is a sign, more and more visible, that our cycle advances rapidly towards its end. Any combat against it, all "return to the eternal principles," necessarily goes "against the direction of human evolution." It is a phase of the perpetual fight against the current of Time. But this is, I repeat it, I insist on it, a reason -- the imperative reason -- to exalt rather than to condemn it.)
[*He had, at the beginning of the century, played a leading role in the anti-British "terrorist" movement of Bengal.]

Recite a page or two from the poem as a daily routine
Savitri From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This modern epic written in a modern language is also a modern day scripture. It recounts the saga of human victory over ignorance and conquest of death. Painstakingly composed in a rhythmic meter, each line of the poem is suffused with power of Mantra. No wonder, thousands of devotees, the world over, recite a page or two from the poem as a daily routine to invoke the Divine presence for physical manifestation of the Supramental Age or Savitri Era. Many even find the answers to their doubts and questions by opening the book at random. On special occasions, continuous recitation of Savitri on a relay basis is also quite common in the Centers where The Mother and Sri Aurobindo are worshipped. Regular camps and conclaves are also organized at different places in the world to study the poem and contemplate over its occult force. The devotees of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo live their lives in a state of expectancy for the next higher evolution of consciousness. Reading Savitri is itself considered as practice of yoga and a potent vehicle of aspiration. And, therefore, its central role in the Savitri Era fraternity is often affirmed with both awe and affection.

I’ve gotten access to a lot more of the Mother’s commentary on Sri Aurobindo’s works, and it’s been quite illuminating for me...I’ve also been meeting with people from the integral yoga community here in New York and in New Jersey as well. There is also a study group in Manhattan and we meet weekly to read Savitri and meditate together. Apart from making new friends, I also met Sraddalu Ranade from the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, who was here from India to deliver some talks and lead us through guided meditations. When my Master’s program ends in 2009, I plan on paying a visit to India, especially Pondicherry and Auroville. (Let’s hope the Indian and Pakistani governments don’t create too many problems with my visa!)

Both The Mother and Sri Aurobindo spent their formative years in the West
It is not a coincidence that both the Mother and Sri Aurobindo spent their formative years in the West but carried out their work, of manifesting the higher truth, in India. It was all a part of the global vision of things that they have given us. Cambridge has played an important role in Sri Aurobindo’s life, in the preparation of “the strength of knowledge”. And even though more than a century has passed since he was there, when you stand in the grounds of King’s College you know that you are in a very special place on this earth. Even Time seems to be holding its breath in awe.

hi Tusar
Whatever gave you the impression I don't appreciative your activities? Our only difference is an intellectual one, in that you believe that there can be a new religion based on Sri Aurobindo and The Mother's teachings, whereas I myself personally dislike religions and fixed dogmas of any sort, even those based on the most sublime teachings there are! So it is an intellectual difference of perspective, but it doesn't mean I don't very highly value and support your own excellent endevours! ...The reason being that this is what people most relate to, not a polished surface veneer of sterile intellectualism. Even in my books I will try to have as much refernces to sadhana and experience as I can, otherwise it would just be boring abstractions, too much mental and not enough practical. alan
Another view on the role India to play for the upliftment of man
The speech published here -- called Uttarpara Speech, given by Sri Aurobindo on 30 May 1909 -- offers another view on the role India and Hinduism are going to play in a hopefully near future for the upliftment of man.
The Sanatan Dharma -- eternal because universal -- does not belong just to India, but to every nation of the world.

Mantra vs. meditation
Japa imparts to those who practice it a kind of precision, a kind of solidity - an armature Sunday, September 16, 2007 Source: Nama-Japa in the Yoga of Transformation by Sri Ramkrishna Das
The Mother (Sri Aurobindo Ashram) has differentiated between those who do Nama-Japa and those who go deep in meditation and concentrate but do not practice Nama-Japa. She has said:
Posted by Ramachandran T S at 8:20 PM"In fact, you can immediately see the difference between those who have a mantra and those who don't. With those who have no mantra, even if they have a strong habit of meditation or concentration, something around them remains hazy and vague. Whereas the Japa imparts to those who practice it a kind of precision, a kind of solidity: an armature. They become galvanized, as it were."
Sri Aurobindo is light years beyond
Also, “at this stage” implies some sort of linear sequence. For me there is no linear sequence of this sort. alan kazlev Says: September 13th, 2007 at 3:48 pm Open Integral
Sri Aurobindo, who established the Integral consciousness in the Noosphere at the start of the 20th century, is light years beyond early 21st century Wilber. So this shows how misleading historical thinking can be (Jean Gebser is also critical of this sort of historical approach). It’s a Western creation story, based on a misreading of Darwin (and btw Darwin is my favourite scientist; I’m not saying Darwinism is wrong, only the popular misinterpretation of him; same with quantum physics and New Age pop quantum physics)

Nitya (or the eternal substance) and the Leela (literally, "play")
Like Adi Sankara had done more than a thousand years earlier, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa revitalised Hinduism which had been fraught with excessive ritualism and superstition in the Nineteenth century and helped it become better-equipped to respond to challenges from Islam, Christianity and the dawn of the modern era[9]. However, unlike Adi Sankara, Ramakrishna developed ideas about the post-samadhi descent of consciousness into the phenomenal world, which he went on to term "vignana". While he asserted the supreme validity of Advaita Vedanta, he also proclaimed that he accepts both the Nitya (or the eternal substance) and the Leela (literally, "play", indicating the dynamic phenomenal reality) as aspects of Brahman, which basically means a denial of non-duality. The idea of the descent of consciousness shows the influence of the Bhakti movement and certain sub-schools of Shaktism on Ramakrishna's thought. The idea would later influence Aurobindo's views about the Divine Life on Earth... Posted by hyper-oxygen at 10:21 AM Labels: Ramakrishna

When Sri Aurobindo left the Baroda College Dr. C.R. Reddy was invited to fill the vacancy
Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan were the two great teachers who worked in the city. When Aurobindo Ghosh left the Baroda College, the Gaekwar of Baroda invited Dr. C.R. Reddy to fill the vacancy. K.M. Munshi once mentioned that Dr. Reddy’s lectures were so inspiring that he would often attend the sessions just for the pleasure of it, though he was not a student of his class. In 1925, Dr. Reddy was appointed as the foundation Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University. During the non-cooperation days when leaders like Gandhi, Nehru and Sarojini Naidu were put in prison, he stepped down from the V-C’s post in protest. The resignation letter was considered to be a gem of a piece and here is an excerpt from that letter: “The sacrifices and sufferings of my countrymen and countrywomen make it impossible for me to continue in my present position. I find the Vice-Chancellorship neither a pleasure nor an honour in the midst of these agonies.” Dr. S. Radhakrishnan took charge after his resignation and continued till he left for England to take up professorship in eastern philosophy at Oxford University. Dr. Reddy took over again after Radhakrishnan for another term and was primarily responsible for the development of AU. (Contributed by Kolluru Jagannadha Rao)

Re: Keys to the Record: The normality of the Supernormal (Siddihis in Sri Aurobindo's Record of Yoga) by Richard Hartz
by Srikanth on Thu 06 Sep 2007 02:58 PM PDT Profile Permanent Link This appears to be a second article by Richard Hartz (I understand he is someone who works/ed in the Archives) posted here recently. It is important to know where these articles were originally published and if they were written for SCIY. Reply by Rich on Thu 06 Sep 2007 06:57 PM PDT Profile Permanent Link Srikanth Just curious as to why publication information would be consider so important? rich Reply by Srikanth on Thu 06 Sep 2007 08:02 PM PDT Profile Permanent Link Well, there are several reasons. I have not been able to get any significant information on Hartz anywhere so far. Moreover, I am curious why he has not posted them himself or more pertinently, why he does not seem to have requested (no explicit sign of it) them to be posted. One explanation is that they have been published elsewhere like some other articles here (I havent found anything online so far). I like to be careful where I can and prefer to evaluate the original articles or posts for veracity, context, and the wider views of the author. S Reply by Rich on Thu 06 Sep 2007 09:37 PM PDT Profile Permanent Link SCIY is always open to publish articles from authors who have a significant contribution to make to Sri Aurobindo studies. All articles are posted here only by the editors. Many of Richard's articles have been from text which he has presented earlier at various conferences around India rich.

Fountain of human light
V SUNDARAM Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) wrote in Bande Mataram on 7 October, 1907:
'This great and ancient Nation was once the fountain of human light, the apex of civilisation, the exemplar of courage and humanity, the perfection of good government and settled society, the mother of all religions, the teacher of all wisdom and philosophy. It has suffered much at the hands of inferior civilisations and more savage peoples; it has gone down into the shadow of night and tasted often of the bitterness of death. Its pride has been trampled into the dust and its glory has departed.' e-mail the writer at vsundaram@newstodaynet.com GO TOP / HOME / OTHER SPECIAL STORIES

Sri Aurobindo, the great Indian revolutionary philosopher
Academic Portfolio Tuesday, September 4, 2007 Eastern Philosophy Letter
By Sudipa Sarkar Conclusion
By Sudipa Sarkar Conclusion
Sri Aurobindo is considered one of the amongst all the greatest philosophers of all the time, who has provided a surface understanding of the creation of universe and the existence of soul with the depiction of the interaction of soul. The letters written by Sri Aurobindo is the exquisite example of classical Hindu philosophy which describes the evolution in relation to the universe by the virtue of rationalization of cosmic ideas and principle governing the transcendental movement of nature. This is true that the transcendent ideas of spiritual planes and its complexities as illustrated by Sri Aurobindo requires great steadiness, more focus and intensity of thought and realization, but we can still gain a comprehensible knowledge expressed in unimpeachable reason and logic if we can settle ourselves in an inner silence. Chinese to read book on Sri Aurobindo
China keen to learn English from India Times of India 4 Sep 2007 Saibal Dasgupta
This is his third time Mani of Orient Longman is visiting the annual Beijing fair. Orient Longman sold one book title in 2005 and none in 2006. This is why its success in this year's book fair is an indication of the growing eagerness among the Chinese to learn from a veriety of things from India including the art of studying English. "Our books on learning English are as good as any in the western world. And, of course, our costs are also lower," Mani said. Other Indian publishers managed to evoke interest among their Chinese counterparts to book titles on a variety of other issues raging from chemicals, IT, defence and cultural issues. Indian book titles other than those dealing with English learning will be translated in Chinese. Nuzhat Hassan, director of the National Book Trust, said her organisation is actively negotiating with Chinese publishers for selling title rights of eight books including two books on Buddism, two on Yoga, one on ancient Hindus, one on Sri Aurobindo and one on puzzles... "I think China is a good market. It is all a question of perseverance. We expect some demand for book titles on subjects like maths and sciences for children as well," Mani said.
