Floral decorations and designs are created twice daily on the Samadhi

Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother
— Photographs by Gangaram Malwade Publisher: Department of Physical Education, Pondicherry Binding: Hard Cover Pages: 122 Price: Rs 450

These 111 photographs of the Samadhi, seven inches by ten inches in size, taken at different times of the day and from different angles, have been collected and printed on art paper in this volume. They evoke the presence of this sacred place with its atmosphere of deep peace and serenity. Many of the photographs capture the beauty of the floral decorations and designs that are created twice daily on the Samadhi. A short introduction records how the care of the Samadhi and its environs developed from December 1950 to the present and includes many of the Mother's instructions on how things were to be kept and arranged.

We collect soil samples from around the world as a testimony of Human Unity

COLLECTION OF SOIL SAMPLES FROM AROUND THE WORLD
We have been collecting soil samples from around the world since many years. It was initially started for technical reasons, which were to identify the soil qualities, and to show the different textures and colours of soil from around the world.

Today we also collect them as a testimony of Human Unity, as Auroville aims, among other things, to reach this goal. During the foundation ceremony of Auroville on 28th February 1968, 124 Nations and 22 States of India placed a handful of soil from their country in the urn, at the centre of the future city.

The 40th foundation day of Auroville includes a pre-dawn bonfire

SOUTHERN NEWS - TAMIL NADU Feb 27, 2008
Auroville celebrating 40th foundation day on Feb 28 ENS PUDUCHERRY:

Former Director General of UNESCO A.M M'Bow will participate at the 40th foundation day celebration of Auroville on February 28. Auroville, the international township under development on the south-east Indian coast, located 10 kms from Puducherry was inaugurated on Feb 28, 1968 after UNESCO endorsed the concept of Auroville, put forth before the General Assembly of UNESCO by the Indian government. Youths representing 124 nations and all Indian states came together to inauguarate the township and receive its charter, which states that Auroville belongs to nobody in particular but to humanity as a whole.

Addressing a press conference, a panel of Aurovillians said that at present, around 2000 people from 40 nations live in Auroville that has been planned to accommodate 50,000 people, as one race and one shared earth. The largest community is Indian, followed by French, German and others. The township is based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo, the renowned Yogi and philosopher, and his spiritual collaborator known as Mother. The Aurovillians are engaged in diverse activities and are all volunteers who receive a monthly basic maintenence of Rs 5000 to help sustain themselves or pay for themselves partly or entirely out of their own resources. In 1988, the project was given special status by the Government of India, when Auroville Foundation was created by an Act of Parliament.

The 40th foundation day of Auroville includes a pre-dawn bonfire, symposium on human unity, presentation on the township and its activities, exhibitions and an evening of cultural programmes. Sri Aurobindo's statue which has been installed for the first time in Savitri Bhavan would be open for floral tribute and meditation.

SAWCHU building, Bharat Nivas ::: 6:30 PM

Programme: Bharatanatyam dance by Harinie Jeevitha

Organized by: Auroville Cultural Exchange Date: 23 February, Saturday Time: 6.30 p.m. Place: SAWCHU, Bharat Nivas
The young virtuoso Harinie Jeevitha of Sri Devi Nrithyalaya will present the items of the authentic Melattur style (you can watch her online videos on www.SriDeviNrithyalaya.org). The programme isdeveloped to suit the non-Indian audience too, and includes the translations of the songs, explanation of the key symbols and elements of the Bharatanatyam technique.
If you thought that all Bharatanatyam recitals are just tedious parodies on the English ballet where some clumsy amateur-level dancers or elderly semi-retired professional clowns simply walk or run all over the stage and try to impress the spectators with some lengthy boring pantomime that you do not understand, we guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised if you come and watch the Bharatanatyam dance programme by the winner of this year's all-India Bharatanatyam competition held in Hyderabad.
Admission: free.

Sri Aurobindo's Letters

Sri Aurobindo's Writings

Volume 27
PDF last updated: 18 Dec 07 Letters on Poetry and Art Letters on poetry and other forms of literature, on painting and the other arts, on beauty and aesthetics, and on their relation to the practice of yoga. Most of these letters were written by Sri Aurobindo in the 1930 and 1940s to members of his ashram. Around one sixth of them were published during his lifetime; the rest were transcribed from his manuscripts after his passing. Many are being published for the first time in this volume.

Volumes 28-31
Letters on Yoga — I–IV (TO BE PUBLISHED) Four volumes of letters on the integral yoga, other spiritual paths, the problems of spiritual life, and related subjects. In these letters, Sri Aurobindo explains the foundations of his integral yoga, its fundamentals, its characteristic experiences and realisations, and its method of practice. He also discusses other spiritual paths and the difficulties of spiritual life. Related subjects include the place of human relationships in yoga; sadhana through meditation, work and devotion; reason, science, religion, morality, idealism and yoga; spiritual and occult knowledge; occult forces, beings and powers; destiny, karma, rebirth and survival. Sri Aurobindo wrote most of these letters in the 1930s to disciples living in his ashram. A considerable number of them are being published for the first time.

Volume 32
The Mother with Letters on the Mother (TO BE PUBLISHED) This volume opens with Sri Aurobindo's small book The Mother, in which he describes the nature, character and role of the Divine Mother. The rest of the volume consists primarily of letters on the Mother — on the Divine Mother and on Sri Aurobindo's collaborator, the Mother, who was the head of his ashram. He wrote most of these letters in the 1930s to disciples living in the ashram.

Volume 35
Letters on Himself and the Ashram (TO BE PUBLISHED) Sri Aurobindo's letters between 1927 and 1950 on his life, his path of yoga and the practice of yoga in his ashram. In these letters, Sri Aurobindo writes about his life as a student in England, a teacher in Baroda, a political leader in Bengal, and a writer and yogi in Pondicherry. He also comments on his formative spiritual experiences and the development of his yoga. In the latter part of the volume, he discusses the life and discipline followed in his ashram and offers advice to the disciples living and working in it. Sri Aurobindo wrote these letters between 1927 and 1950 — most of them in the 1930s.

Anniversay celebrations of Auroville township on Feb 28

Chennai Online, India - Puducherry Feb 12: Arrangements are underway for the 40th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the Auroville International township, ...

India, in particular, is a divinely chosen country

The Mother on India
India is not the earth, rivers and mountains of this land, neither is it a collective name for the inhabitants of this country. India is a living being, as much living as, say, Shiva. India is a goddess. If she likes, she can manifest in human form.
In the whole creation the earth has a place of distinction, because unlike any other planet it is evolutionary with a psychic entity at its centre. In it, India, in particular, is a divinely chosen country.
India ought to be the spiritual leader of the world. Inside she has the capacity, but outside. ..for the moment there is still much to do for her to become actually the spiritual leader of the world. There is such a wonderful opportunity just now! but.

Sri Aurobindo (Bande mataram-I6 April1907)
Ours is the eternal land, the eternal people, the eternal religion, whose strength, greatness, holiness may be overclouded but never, even for a moment, utterly cease. The hero, the Rishi, the saint, are the natural fruits of our Indian soil; and there has been no age in which they have not been born. www.searchforlight.org/india_thegodsabode.htm

The Mother, while describing some experience...

... suddenly I heard, as if they came from all the corners of the earth, those great notes one sometimes hears in the subtle physical, a little like those of Beethoven's Concerto in D-major, which come in moments of great progress, as though fifty orchestras had burst forth all in unison, without a single false note, to express the joy of this new communion between Nature and Spirit, the meeting of old friends who come together again after having been separated for so long.

Heehs gives us back Aurobindo Ghose as a political figure, as a prolific writer, and as a religious teacher

The Lives of Sri Aurobindo. A new biography by Peter Heehs
by Rich on Fri 01 Feb 2008 06:37 PM PST Permanent Link
From what I have read of Peter's work it resists the fossilized interpretations which have become a feature of Sri Aurobindo scholarship since his passing in 1950. These works read as if they were written in that much earlier time, often trying to imitate the stylistic expressions of the Master and place him in a superhuman context. The result of this is that they shed precious little light on the complex phenomena that was Sri Aurobindo's by reducing him to a merely religious figure. From what I have read of Peter's work his style seems fittingly critical and contemporary as it seeks to understand its subject from a variety of perspectives. I have not seen this new work but is synopsis leads me to believe that he is continuing to follow his past successes. rc
From Amazon: Editorial Reviews Review
"The Lives of Sri Aurobindo easily constitutes the most comprehensive, thorough, and balanced study of Aurobindo Ghose's life and thought to date. Heehs's remarkable access to archival sources both at the ashram itself and in numerous other archives around the world establishes this text as the definitive study of Aurobindo's immense output in all of its genres and modes. Heehs's text humanizes and problematizes an historical figure whose complexity has been more or less lost to us via hagiography, piety, and now Hindutva apologetics. In some very real sense, Heehs gives us back Aurobindo Ghose as a political figure, as a prolific writer, and as a religious teacher -- all in all, a remarkable accomplishment. His writing is clear, uncluttered, precise, and in places even quite beautiful. There are few scholarly texts that I can say I genuinely enjoyed reading, but this is one of them." -- Jeffrey J. Kripal, author of Esalen: American and the Religion of No Religion
"Poet, philosopher, visionary, and spiritual teacher, Sri Aurobindo has at last received the scholarly biography he deserves -- and we need." -- Robert McDermott, author of The Essential Aurobindo
"Here are the details in a biography of the great man that is not only reliable but transparent in letting its sources speak. Throughout we hear the voices of Aurobindoand his contemporaries. Peter Heehs has expanded his work in SRI AUROBINDO: A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY (1989) and THE BOMB OF BENGAL (1993) to present a full picture. Among the five lives -- son, scholar, revolutionary, yogin-philosopher, and guide -- the last is where Heehs is the most original. He tells a story that needs all the background of the previous episodes to explain the ending, which is the mourning of India as reported in the Indian press in 1950 when Aurobindo died, elegantly summarized by Heehs. Heehs has written the definitive biography to date and a superb introduction to the life and thought of Sri Aurobindo. " -- Stephen Phillips, professor of philosophy and Asian studies, University of Texas at Austin Book Description
Since his death in 1950, Sri Aurobindo Ghose has been known primarily as a yogi and a philosopher of spiritual evolution who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in peace and literature. However, the years Aurobindo spent in yogic retirement were preceded by nearly four decades of rich public and intellectual work. Biographers usually focus solely on Aurobindo's life as a politician or sage, but he was also a scholar, a revolutionary, a poet, a philosopher, a social and cultural theorist, and the inspiration for an experiment in communal living.
Peter Heehs, one of the founders of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Archives, is the first to relate all aspects of Aurobindo's life. Consulting rare primary sources, Heehs describes Aurobindo's role in the freedom movement and in the framing of modern Indian spirituality. He examines the thinker's literary, cultural, and sociological writings and the Sanskrit, Bengali, English, and French literature that influenced them, and he finds the foundations of Aurobindo's yoga practice in the spiritual leader's diaries and unpublished letters. Heehs's biography is a sensitive, honest portrait of a life that also offers some surprising revelations concerning twentieth-century Indian history.
