The West has produced saints who were spiritual giants but, like India, is loosing track of its roots. Father Bede Griffiths has discarded the body over a decade ago, so a confused Western mentality has lost even this pillar of Christian/Hindu spirituality.

Dr. Daniel Acharuparampil, 70, Archbishop of Varappuzha and President of Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) passed away here at the Lourdes Mission Hospital on Monday at 11.10 a. m. [...]

Born into a traditional Catholic family in 1939 at Pallippuram, near here, he entered the seminary in 1956. He was ordained a priest in March 1966 and went on to complete his studies in Philosophy and to compete a Master's Degree from Benares Hindu University.

He was known as a scholar who delved deep into Hindu spirituality and wrote several books on the subject, including "Hindu Mysticism and Spirituality" and "The Destiny of Man in the Evolutionary Thought of Sri Aurobindo."

The Hindu : Kerala - Thiruvananthapuram News : Archbishop worked for religious amity, says VS Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009

‘Erudite’
Kummanam Rajashekharan, general secretary of Hindu Aikya Vedi, said the late archbishop strove to create harmony among communities. The archbishop took the stand that one’s religious beliefs did not grant one the freedom to interfere in the religious beliefs of others. Simon Britto, MLA, remembered the deep erudition of the archbishop in Indian philosophical thought and Sri Aurobindo’s teachings.

A passionate teacher Express Buzz 27 Oct 2009

Archbishop Acharuparambil, who always had a passion for Indian Philosophy, went into the depths of Indian Philosophy, and analysed it in a Christian view. He secured Licentiate in Philosophy from the Pontifical Athenaeum, Pune, and secured PG in Indian Philosophy from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He passed out with a gold medal. He secured PhD from the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas, Rome, in 1978 on a thesis on Indian philosopher Aurobindo Ghose.

The Archbishop dedicated the vibrant period of his life to teaching and research in Indian philosophy. He started teaching Indian Philosophy at the PUU in 1972. In 1986, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Missiology at the PUU and served there from 1988 to 1994. He was then appointed Rector Magnificus of the PUU. Fr Daniel was the first non-European to be appointed to the post which is an equivalent to a University Vice- Chancellor. He continued in the post for six years.

An expert in Italian language, the Archbishop has authored four books - three in Italian and one in English. ‘The Destiny of Man in the Revolutionary Thought of Aurobindo’, Induisom: Vita e Penseiro (Hinduism: Life and Philosophy), Induisom: Eterna ricerca della verita (Hinduism: In Pursuit of Sanathana Truth) and Spiritualita e mistica indu (Hindu Mysticism and Spirituality). He has also authored 48 research papers.

Mahatma Gandhi is less relevant than Sri Aurobindo when it comes to national vision

What does future hold for Pakistan?
Posted by Team Folks on 10/24/09 • Categorized as Cover Stories

In his famous Uttarapara speech of 1909, Sri Aurobindo defined nationalism as a dharma invoking its history and tradition: Dr. NS Rajaram

Still the spirit of Indian nationalism withstood such assaults on unity as Gandhiji’s ill-fated Khilafat Movement, and Jinnah’s blood-soaked cry for Partition. Here lies the difference: where Sri Aurobindo’s was an all-inclusive national vision, Jinnah was for an exclusive and ill-defined sectarian state that is now crumbling against the forces of history and geography. Worse, he let loose forces of violence that are now on the verge of consuming what he created. [...]

The contrast with Aurobindo’s vision could hardly be starker: Jinnah’s is a negative, even a defeatist vision with a level of exclusivism that can never be a unifying force. So here is the real conflict of national visions— Aurobindo’s spiritual unity against Jinnah’s divisiveness rooted in exclusivism. Mahatma Gandhi is less relevant than Sri Aurobindo when it comes to national vision. (Gandhi was a more crusader in the name of ahimsa than national visionary, but that is a different story.)

Brinda Karat

Neither her Bengali mother (Asrukawna Mitra) nor her Punjabi father (Suraj Lall Das, a refugee from the newly-created Pakistan, who held corporate positions in Calcutta) was associated with party politics. But both were considered rebels at the time as they chose to marry outside their respective communities. While her mother’s maternal family was connected with Sri Aurobindo, her mother was an admirer of Subhash Chandra Bose. Posted: Sat, Aug 11 2007. 2:21 AM IST Mint Lounge Ashish Sharma New Delhi
