A timeline of all the letters written by Sri Aurobindo

 Collated by Tusar Nath Mohapatra

What is the most importat moment in life? The present moment. For the past no longer exists and the future does not yet exist Mother 15:79.

Any reason for excluding Sri Aurobindo from the list of deviants?

The decisive criterion is whether an organisation’s or cult’s foundational doctrines and practices implicitly or explicitly affirm the foundational Hindu metaphysical first principles based on Veda and remain substantially within Hindu religious framework. On that criterion, Sri Aurobindo, Arya Samaj, etc are within Hindu fold.

Vedic Chhanda: Sandarbha Alankara

Let us look at the Bhagavad Gita 2.61 and 6.14 respectively:

तानि सर्वाणि संयम्य युक्त आसीत मत्पर: ।
वशे हि यस्येन्द्रियाणि तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता ॥ 61॥

प्रशान्तात्मा विगतभीर्ब्रह्मचारिव्रते स्थित: ।

मन: संयम्य मच्चित्तो युक्त आसीत मत्पर: ॥ 14॥

What does the first one say? 2.61 says that having brought all the senses under control, he must sit firm in yoga, wholly given up to Me; for whose senses are mastered, of him the intelligence is firmly established.

6.14 says that with a peaceful mind, free from fear, established in the vow of Brahmacharya, the whole controlled mentality turned to Me (the Divine), he must sit firm in yoga, wholly given up to me

Are they not saying something similar? No, for if you notice the emphasis has shifted to the complete unity and identification of consciousness with Sri Krishna in the second one. In the first shloka, it was the means; in the second it is the goal.

The same pada has now completely changed in significance due to its location and reference. This happens in the Veda often with the shift in sandarbha giving us a musically ever-fresh experience of the Veda. Meanings change subtly with slight shifts in order and placement and each time the echo is different

Vedic Chhanda: Prateek Alankara or Symbol

This alankara has been massively under appreciated

In the Veda an image may stand for itself. It may stand for something else. It may be a part of an elaborate system of symbols

For example, Agni is Fire. Agni is a deva. Agni is part of Vedic symbol system

An image may be a code. It may be an experience. Energy. Movement. Meaning. A note of music. It may be a link

Hope this is clear so far.

A sound may be a symbol. A sound may be experience. A sound may be an image

In fact, the entire Veda stands for something else. It is a symbol. A metaphor. A grand Art

Ancient Greek matters because someone, 2,500 years ago, already asked all the questions we’re asking ourselves. Who we are, what’s right, what happiness is, why we suffer. They wrote tragedies, not motivational posts. We don’t study Greek because it’s dead. We study it because without those questions, we’d never have been born. Studying Greek won’t help you make more money; it’ll help you understand what’s worth spending it on.

Tongdong’s mistake, he argues, is to equate democracy solely with elections.
