CHENNAI: In a land infamous for female infanticide, a small group of women is heralding social reform with a new interpretation of the adage ‘where there is a will, there’s a way’. Twelve women of a self-help group (SHG) in Usilampatti, 40 km from Madurai in Tamil Nadu, have bequeathed their wealth to their granddaughters. The message to the new generation is strong and simple: Take care of the girl child and inherit our wealth. Now the idea is catching on in the region.
The first step for these women was to empower themselves. “None of us were working and we had no money, though we hail from middle-class families,” says Chellammal. She realised that women had to earn to be powerful. “The Aurobindo Meditation Centre in Usilampatti helped us set up a supermarket,” she says. Prosperity supermarket, which opened in January 2005, now has a monthly turnover of Rs 1.5 lakh.
“When Chellammal told me she was depositing her earnings in the names of her granddaughters, I suggested everyone in the group should do that,” says Parimala of the Aurobindo Centre. “Now, about 50 women are following suit and we are spreading the message in the villages,”
Some women like Pandiammal (43) have nominated their daughters as beneficiaries of inheritance. “I feel ashamed when people of other towns refuse to let their daughters marry Usilampatti men, fearing that their girl children may be killed,” she says. Gory tales of girl babies being killed by the administration of ‘kallipal’ (cactus sap), or being asphyxiated by having their nostrils blocked with paddy grains, abound in Usilampatti.

HOUSE STATUE: For a more than five-year-term in Parliament, all a statue needs is a sponsor.

New Delhi: Speaker Somnath Chatterjee says that statues are a reminder to Parliamentarians of the ideals of democracy and history and in keeping with his words, 36 statues are being erected in Parliament. The question is, do these mute statues make MPs behave or are they as helpless as the Speaker is to maintain decorum in the House?
Winning a seat to Parliament may be tough, but for statues, it's becoming much easier to get in. To get a more than five-year-term in Parliament, all a statue needs to do is find a sponsor, usually a private trust. Even an MP would do. Two cases in point are the statues of Sri Aurobindo and Swami Vivekanand, which were inuagurated on Wednesday and sponsored by ex-MP L M Singhvi . And these are not all. There are more waiting statues waiting for a coveted place in Parliament.

Aurobindo’s birth anniversary celebrated

Ludhiana, August 16 Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management here celebrated the 134th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo yesterday. The college had organised a paper reading contest to mark the occasion. The topics of the contest were related to the life and philosophy of Sri Aurobindo, Indian culture and philosophy, India’s Independence — historical perspective, economic and social transformation of India and India of my dreams.
The secretary of Sri Aurobindo Society, Mr Manmohan Bamba, was the chief guest. Prof V.P. Gaur, former Principal, SCD Government College, Ludhiana was the guest of honour. Dr D.B. Sharma, Director, Sat Paul Mittal School, and Dr Vijay Asdhir, Principal, Kamla Lohtia SD College, were among the other members of the panel of judges. Mr Bamba spoke to the students about Sri Aurobindo’s life and his teachings and about the mother.
Aakansha Verma of B.Com II stood first in the competition; Sahibpreet of B.Com I was declared second; Darshpreet Singh of B.Com I was adjudged third, and one consolation prize was given to Goria Mangla of B.Com II. Dr Prem Kumar appreciated the efforts of the participants and Col P.S. Choudhry, GM (Admn and Edu.), presented the vote of thanks.

Its wonderful that a place like it exists on this planet

We made it to Pondicherry about 5 in the morning… I was partially asleep and just followed ppl where ever they went . We had to meet Vidya’s friend and went in search of the place we were staying. We ended up in the outskirts of the city(about 6km from the city) and thats when we realized that there was another place with the same name in the city. Thej called up Rajesh(Vidya’s friend) and realized that Rajesh was actually at the bus stand itself. This thing of reaching a place then retuning became a pattern in the trip.
Pondicherry is a very beautiful place… Its history and culture are incredibly rich and you are just exposed to the culture it adapted thanks to its previous residents. The area we stayed in was beautiful, just 5 min from the beach(by walk), nice roads and very clean. 15th Aug, India’s Independence day also happens to be Sri Aurobindo’s birthday. All hotels in Pondicherry were booked and we ended up staying in a dormitory which was nice in its own way. Sid was not feeling great at the start of the trip and it got worse in Pondi. He was fully bedridden and saw nothing other than the inside of the room. He had viral fever and cost him almost the entire trip.
Our stay in Pondicherry constituted almost of 70% of visiting different Ashrams in the city. We had our breakfast and lunch in the Ashram and leaving Thug nobody actually enjoyed the porridge and brown bread. Lunch was much better for us as we hardly took time with the rice and sambar. We visited the cloth mills and paper factories. We bought a little merchandise in the stores filled with scented candles and incense sticks. It was lunch time when we finally ended our tour.
We visited Auroville during the afternoon. The concept of Auroville sounds great and its wonderful that a place like it exists on this planet. Auroville also boasts of its amazing beauty… let it be the well constructed buildings or the thick lush trees that surronds the place. In the evening we walked to the beach and played a little in the water. I hv always thought beaches are the most calming places and always felt that ppl who live near the sea are truly blessed. Having lived all my life in landlocked Bangalore it was a pleasure to spend sometime in the ocean water. We played in the water until sunset and walked back to our room. M.N. Roy, the lonely lion

Roy, Manabendra Nath (1887-1954) communist leader and a revolutionary. Manabendra Nath Roy's father Dinabandhu Bhattacharjee was a Sanskrit teacher in a minor English school in Arbelia village of 24 Parganas of West Bengal. Born on 21 March 1887, his early name was Narendra Nath Bhattacharjee and was known in this name till 1916. Though he adopted different names such as C Martin, Hari Sing, Mr White, D Garcia, Dr Mahmood, Mr Banerjee etc at different times in conducting revolutionary activities, he was known as Manabendra Nath Roy (MN Roy), the name he adopted at San Francisco to evade arrest.
Naren had his early schooling at Arbelia. The family shifted to Kodalia in 1898. He studied in Harinavi Anglo-Sanskrit School until 1905. Keen in social service, he organised a volunteer group to nurse the sick, particularly those suffering from epidemics and famines. He was inspired by the writings of bankimchandra chattopadhyay and swami viveknanda. At the wake of the partition of bengal he came in contact with the militant nationalists. In 1905 Naren and some of his friends were rusticated from the school for attending a meeting addressed by surendranath banerjea and joining the procession, in violation of the order of the Headmaster. Later on he was introduced to the anushilan samiti of aurobindo ghosh.
Naren passed the Entrance Examination from the newly started National University (started by Aurobindo) and then he studied Engineering and Chemistry in the Bengal Technical Institute. He was actually a self-taught person. At this time, with his underground group, he experimented in bomb making and practised shooting in the Sundarbans. The group collected money by robbery for revolutionary purposes.
For sometime he worked with Bagha Jatin (Jatindra Nath Mukhopadhyay) in the Jugantar of the Anushilan Samiti. Naren and his group were involved in underground activities in Howrah-Sibpur area and were arrested in 1910 to face the 'Howrah-Sibpur Conspiracy Case, 1910-11'. During the trial period that lasted for more than a year, Jatin and Naren, in confinement, planned to arrange armed insurrection all over India. On release, Naren travelled in the garb of a sanyasi until 1914. The revolutionary organisations were extended to Far East, West America, and Germany where Indian revolutionary committees were formed...
In 1948, he abolished Radical Democratic Party and founded Radical Humanist Association. He founded Indian Renaissance Institute and edited the quarterly journal The Humanist Way which was originally named as The Marxian Way. He wrote another significant book titled Reason, Romanticism and Revolution. He attempted to write his memoirs that he could not complete.
Roy succumbed to a severe attack of coronary thrombosis at midnight of 24-25 January 1954 in Dehradun. He married Ellen Gottsechalk in 1937 after his first wife Evelyn had left him in 1925. Mitra, Krishna Kumar (1852-1936) one of the leaders of the brahma samaj and the swadeshi movement, was born in 1852 in the village of Baghil in mymensingh in a conservative Hindu kayastha family. His father, Guruprasad Mitra, was a middle class landholder and patriot who organised an armed struggle in his village against oppressive English indigo planters. In 1881, Krishna Kumar married Lilabati Devi, fourth daughter of rajnarayan basu, according to Brahma rites...
During his college days in Kolkata, Krishna Kumar had made friends with ananda mohan bose, Herambachandra Moitra, Kalishankar Shukul and Shrinath Chanda; their influence prompted him to join the swadeshi movement. He was a close associate of surendranath banerjee and together they travelled across northern India to publicise their political ideas. In 1890 he joined the indigo cultivators' agitation. He was associated with the Indian National Congress since its birth in 1885 but in 1921 opposed Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement.
In 1883 Krishna Kumar launched a nationalist Bengali weekly, Sanjibani, in cooperation with Kalishankar and others. As editor, he endeavoured to raise the latent nationalistic consciousness of the people. In his article 'Tea or Coolie's Blood', he exposed the repression of tea workers by owners of the tea gardens of Assam. His protests forced the government to provide legal protection to tea garden workers. As a journalist he will be remembered for his bold advocacy of the freedom of the press.
Krishna Kumar was opposed to the partition of Bengal (1905-1911) and used his journal to arouse public opinion against the partition. He openly advocated boycott of foreign goods and refused to accept advertisements for these goods in Sanjibani. At the provincial Congress session at Barisal in 1906, he condemned harassment by the police and police atrocities. When aurobindo ghosh was arrested in 1908 in the Maniktala bomb case, it was at the initiative of Krishna Kumar that chitta ranjan das was made defense counsel. On 10 December 1908 Krishna Kumar was detained by the British government and sent to Agra jail for his involvement in the swadeshi movement.
Krishna Kumar was a dedicated social reformer who fought against idolatry, the caste system and social prejudices. He also opposed the repression of women and formed the Nari Raksa Samity to work for their rights and protection. He advocated temperance, and strongly criticised the government plan to set up public drinking houses. Puritanical Brahma, liberal social thinker, staunch nationalist, Krishna Kumar was an enthusiastic reformer and dedicated journalist. Apart from his writings in Sanjibani, he also wrote a number of books, among them Mahammad-Charita, Buddhadev-Charita and Bauddhadharmer Sangksipta Bibaran. [Sambaru Chandra Mohanta]

The basic text of the Yoga philosophical school, the Yoga Sutras of PataƱjali (2d cent. B.C.), is a systematization of one of these older traditions. Contemporary systems of yoga, such as those of Sri Aurobindo Ghose and Sri Chinmoy Ghose, stress that spiritual realization can be attained without the withdrawal from the world characteristic of the older traditions. Tomorrow (23rd August) a bronze statue of Sri Aurobindo will be installed in the Parliament Hall. The unveiling ceremony will take place at 10 AM and will be covered live by Doordarshan, possibly by some othernews channels also. Chances are that it may be shown in the evening news as well. So keep an eye on the telly. The work of getting the statue made was undertaken by Lalit Verma. Have a nice day tomorrow

I read Sri Aurobindo's complete works for my M.A. thesis, which was supervised by an Aurobindo devotee. He remains a friend even today and we disagree on Aurobindo. My former supervisor also remains a staunch devotee.

The book is about the ideas that went into making of political Hindutva. In other words, it is about genealogy of ideas, rather than suggesting that so and so was a Hindutva votary or any such nonsense. Moreover, the book contains attributions not only to the Bande Mataram period but takes the story upto India's independence and Sri Aurobindo passing on.
There are two things being conflated here. One is my inadequate research, a charge not even worthy of rejection. The second is my perspective, which I am more than happy for people to disagree with. But it is a perspective, not a `misunderstanding' as you suggest. Since, I do not think that philosophical texts ought to be hostage to a single understanding or interpretation. As for his continuing engagement with `otherness' and modernity, I have dealt with it exhaustively, within the parameters of my perspective...
In the case of Sri Aurobindo, all I have suggested in the book is that whether it was the period of revolutionary terrorism or the period as a Maharshi in Pondicherry, there are aspects of Sri Aurobindo's thought that forms the genealogy and patrimony of political Hindutva as we know it today. It simply cannot be dismissed as a simple instance of appropriation, which is the line Mr. Peter Heehs also tends to take. Whether Hinduism is not fossilised, or whether it is an evolving cultural/spiritual corpus or not, this is a subject which I shall try to have my say in a book published next year.

To fully reconcile soul and body and achieve the Life Divine

I do believe that the evolutionary task of our age is to bring these two extremes back together--to fully reconcile soul and body and achieve the Life Divine in a monkey body. In truth, it is merely a matter of emphasis, for there is no question that this is at the heart of the uncorrupted Christian message.
Likewise, although Sri Aurobindo is responsible for correcting Vedanta’s overemphasis on otherworldly concerns, he too was simply going back to the original message of the Upanishads: “Those who combine action and meditation cross the sea of death through action and enter immortality,” that is, through the sacred union of soul and body, spirit and matter, male and female, mamamaya and papurusha (for those who know their sanskrit). posted by Gagdad Bob at 8:22 AM 3 comments

Synthesizing evolutionary theory with Eastern involutionary theory

Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) was born in India, and educated in England where he was exposed to Western ideas and became a writer. After his return to India, he became a newspaper editor and leader of a nationalist movement. After a year in jail, he was introduced to yoga and meditation. Profoundly changed, he went on to found an ashram and dedicate the rest of his life to the study and practice of Advaita (nondual) Vedanta. Though his works are mainly philosophical and metaphysical, he is credited with synthesizing evolutionary theory with Eastern involutionary theory. Thus, his work does not include the detailed scientific references, seen for example, in Teilhard’s or Wilber’s work. Still, Aurobindo outlined a postmodern way to understand how Causal Consciousness creates, one that had a big influence on Wilber’s early work.
Aurobindo wrote The Life Divine (1940) over a period of years from 1914-1920. His version of the “Great Chain of Being” can be simplified into five major aspects nested within the three great fields of All-That-Is: Matter (physical), Life (physical), Mind (physical), Overmind (subtle), and Supermind (causal). “The oldest Vedantic knowledge tells us of five degrees of our being, the material, the vital [Life], the mental, the ideal [Overmind], and the spiritual or beatific [Supermind] and to each of these grades of our soul there corresponds a grade of our substance, a sheath as it was called in the ancient figurative language.
A later psychology found that these five sheaths of our substance were the material of three bodies, gross physical, subtle, and causal, in all of which the soul actually and simultaneously dwells, although there and now we are superficially conscious only of the material vehicle. But it is possible to come conscious in our other bodies as well and it is in fact the opening up of the veil between them and consequently between our physical, psychical [low subtle], and ideal [high subtle] personalities which is the cause of those ‘psychic’ and ‘occult’ phenomena that are now beginning to be increasingly though yet too little and too clumsily examined....” (31)
Further, notice that Matter is equivalent to the physiosphere, Life the biosphere, and Mind the noosphere, the three major stages of evolution to date. Also, Aurobindo’s Vedic ontology of physical, subtle, and causal sheaths or bodies are ontologically equivalent to our use of fields. In his cosmology, Supermind (All-That-Is) functions as the Primal Cause that fuels evolution through involution. “Supermind ... possesses the power of development, of evolution, of making explicit, and that power carries with it the other power of involution, of envelopment, of making implicit. In a sense, the whole of creation may be said to be a movement between two involutions, [Causal] Spirit in which all is involved and out of which all evolves downward to the other pole of Matter, Matter in which also all is involved and out of which all evolves upwards to the other pole of Spirit.” (32)
So what does this great sage see coming next in evolutionary terms? In the closing chapter, The Divine Life, Aurobindo explored probable futures. He wrestled with how the next great phase he called gnostic consciousness might manifest. Possibly in small enclaves and communities, but that has not worked to date in terms of the premodern religions. Though there was no clear path he could discern, he sensed that this next great stage of evolution, gnostic consciousness, would include a profound shift in consciousness and enhanced capacities. “An entirely new consciousness in many individuals transforming their whole being, transforming their mental, vital, and physical nature-self, is needed for the new life to appear; only such a transformation of the general mind, life, body nature can bring into being a new worthwhile collective existence.
The evolutionary [striving] must tend not merely to create a new type of mental beings but another order of beings who have raised their whole existence from our present mentalised animality to a greater spiritual level of the earth-nature. “Any such complete transformation of the earth-life in a number of human beings could not establish itself altogether at once; even when the turning-point has been reached, the decisive line crossed, the new life in its beginnings would have to pass through a period of ordeal and arduous development.” (33) Thus, Aurobindo points to the continued birth pangs as Consciousness attempts to manifest ever more fully in the physical field. « Free Personal Art main Universal & Spiritual Laws ... » .Seth Speaks Newsletter - Volume XXIII Fri, August 4, 2006

Thinker, spiritual leader, mystic, poet and nationalist, Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) was perhaps modern India’s most fascinating and enigmatic leader. Educated in Cambridge, where he was a brilliant Classics scholar, he refused a career in the civil service and returned home to India to become a fiery revolutionary. In jail, where he was imprisoned for sedition, Sri Aurobindo turned to meditation and, finding refuge in the French enclave of Pondicherry, perfected there the practice of yoga. His ashram in Pondicherry continues today, with a large international following.Sri Aurobindo was a prolific writer in English, and his writings cover spiritual discourse, philosophy, cultural history, poetry, linguistics and literary criticism.”In 1915, he began work on an epic poem, that would occupy him for the remaining thirty five years of his life. The subject of the poem was the love story of Savitri and Satyavan.
Eventually, Savitri became a poetic chronicle of his yoga, of equal importance in the corpus of his works to The Life Divine, or The Synthesis of Yoga. It was, moreover, not merely a record of his sadhana (quest), but a part of it. “I used Savitri as a means of ascension”, he wrote in a letter in 1936. “In fact Savitri has not been regarded by me as a poem to be written and finished, but as a field of experimentation to see how far poetry could be written from one’s own yogic consciousness and how that could be made creative.”The composition of Savitri was an endeavour to come in contact with the ‘overhead planes’ that are the native home of the mantra, and to give body to the language and vision of those planes in revelatory speech.In its final form, published in two volumes in 1950 and (posthumously) in 1951, Savitri extends to almost 24,000 lines.
In Sri Aurobindo’s telling of the story, the girl Savitri, granted as a boon to the childless sage Aswapathy, is regarded as an incarnation of the Divine Mother. Aswapathy is a yogin aspiring ‘for a universal realisation and a new creation’. His upward quest is a metaphor for the process of ‘ascent’ in yoga. Sri Aurobindo’s poetical description of the realms through which Aswapathy must pass constitutes his most detailed account of the geography of the inner worlds. But he did not create Savitri simply as a chart for the use of future explorers. He meant it as a rhythmical embodiment of his experiences that could awaken sympathetic vibrations in those who read it. Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharyaji visited Shri Aurobindo Ashram at Pondicherry, Maharshi Raman's Ashram at Tiruvannamalai, Santiniketan of Shri Rabindranath Tagore and worked with Mahatma Gandhi at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. Auroville based handicraft products

Pondy crafts are here: The Pondicherry Pudumai Handicrafts Artisans Cooperative society is back in the city this year with a handicrafts expo on Ganesh Darshan at Sankara Hall, Alwarpet. More than 100 models of Vinayagar, made of clay and paper mesh and stone carvings were on display at the exhibition, including artistic leather crafts, crochet items, marbling printing items, clay toys and dolls for children.

Auroville based handicraft products attracted the attention of the visitors as a variety of new kind of products were displayed including aromatic candle with a fragrance of jasmine, lily, lavender and rose. The candles were supposed to reduce stress and tension. The other products that were displayed include dry flower articles, hand made paper products, precious and semi precious gem stoned and ceramic pottery items. The 13 days expo was inaugurated by P Sundaramurthi, Regional Director, Handicrafts Development Commissioner, Chennai in the presence of V K Munusamy, president, Pudumai Handicrafts Artisans Cooperative society.

New Delhi, August 18 Much to the relief of the Congress-led UPA government, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam today gave his assent to the controversial office of profit Bill, which had been passed by Parliament for the second time without changes. The danger of disqualification, weighing down heavily on the heads of 40 MPs, was now over. The anxiously awaited assent came a day after the government constituted a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to define what constituted an office of profit.
The legislation exempted 56 posts from the ambit of the office of profit, including the UPA’s National Advisory Council, the Uttar Pradesh Development Council, the Sriniketan Santiniketan Development Authority, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams Board, the Krishak Bharti Cooperative Limited, the Auroville Foundation, the Delhi Rural Development Board, the Dr Ambedkar Foundation, the All-India Council of Sports and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts.
