Samhita with its poetic composition and imagery is subtler than Upanishads

June 29 Is Today's Hinduism A Vedic Religiion? Part - 4 By B.N. Gururaj, Advocate.
If one examines the scenario of 19th Century India, when the renaisance of Hinduism commenced, the landscape consisted of utterly meaningless rituals, social and religious customs, highly oppressive to women, and utterly meaningless to the lower strata of Hindu society. This was the stage at which socio-religious reformers like Ram Mohun Roy and Swami Dayananda Saraswati emerged to give new face to Hinduism. While Brahmo Samaj of Ram Mohun Roy tried to make a blend of Hindu dualistic monotheism with Islam and Christianity, Swami Dayananda totally abandoned the philosophical speculations and their complexities and reverted to vedic rituals of Samhita era.
At a later stage, in a slightly modified approach to the Samhitas, Sri Aurobindo expounded the view that the Samhita with its poetic composition and imagery is subtler than Upanishads in expounding spiritual experiences of the Sages and must have primacy over Upanishads. According to Sri Aurobindo, what was subtle and suggestive in Samhitas became explicit in Upanishads, and thus, Upanishads are less refined and more gross of the two. Somehow, this approach did not find much popularity or acceptance outside the circle of devotees of Sri Aurobindo... Religion and Spirituality

AUM and the emphasis of a wider community

by Rich on Mon 25 Jun 2007 09:24 AM PDT Profile Permanent Link Having just returned from the AUM and the emphasis of a wider community. I think it essential to open more themes such as suggested by RYD for SCIY and open the forum up for a greater audience participation. We may all do a skype call to discuss this as I think we can do a conference call via skype. One problem I know is that some folks are either not comfortable or dislike the virtual environment, if not immediately then over time it happens. While there is nothing specific we can do to address this issue We should be aware of this aspect of virtual environments. However, that said there is simply no other way to open this up regularly to a larger audience but via the web. Since there are some other integral yoga related blogs out there, it may also be a consideration to network conversations, and posting among us rich

The significance of Sri Aurobindo’s relics

Dear Subscriber,

This issue focuses on the significance of Sri Aurobindo’s relics, and depicts the story of their enshrinement at The Gnostic Centre pictorially. Of particular interest to the reader, who may not be a disciple or devotee, are the insights contained in Dr. Nadkarni’s write-up, ‘The Coming of Light’. The sections on Pebbles of Faith and Living from Within bring you in touch with the inner responses to the enshrinement and its impact on our lives.
The sections on L’avenir, Parenting, Healthy Living bring insights from our work and experience with children; and Anuradha’s article ‘Is Matter Conscious’ focuses on our involvement in creating the material basis for the Centre’s growth and further work. The report on Events at the end of the journal captures the accelerated pace of work that has begun post-enshrinement. - Ameeta Mehra gnostic centre

The words of Sri Aurobindo help us to rise above fatalism

by waves @ 2007-04-27 - 16:17:59 ARVIND K. PANDEY
The words of Sri Aurobindo help us to rise above fatalism yet having full faith in dharma-oriented principles of Hinduism . Indeed , it's not an easy task to talk about freewill when affairs of life are dictated by the karmas (actions) of past . Sri Aurobindo rightly states that human beings are bound by the "cause and effect" theory confirming that it's a Himalayan task to do away with this cycle in absence of Lord's grace . According to Yogavasishtha destiny is but another name for perseverance . Lord Krishna clear all doubts in this regard when He warns Arjuna that " by your nature, you will have to be engaged in warfare". In other words , although man is guided by his Samskaras(impressions) attained in previous births , the devotion towards Lord allows him to shatter the cycle of Karmas . Well, one can take refuge in Lord or with the help of Buddhi Yoga (work done through wisdom ) easily overcome the impulses generated by the fate . Planned to resemble a galaxy

On Sunday, I go to Auroville on a colleague's suggestion; fascinating little town with a unique charter all about the unity of humanity and not belonging to any nation but rather to truth. Started by 'The Mother,' a Frenchwoman who settled in Pondicherry and ran the ashram with Sri Aurobindo. Auroville sustains itself in a very eco-friendly way, with residents producing clothes/edibles/pottery/candles, running schools, working to regenerate the local vegetation and repopulate the area with indigenous wildlife, and dining in a common hall called the Solar Kitchen.
Sounds just like a kibbutz, except for the big gold epcot ball (Matrimandir) in the centre (also known as the town's soul). Apparently there's a massive crystal inside, light shines through the crystal and pulsates throughout the town, which was planned to resemble a galaxy. Sadly, visitors are not allowed inside the gold ball - probably because cynics like me would wreck the vibe. Anyhow, the grey urn to the front and right of the Matrimandir apparently contains soil from 124 countries - nice earthy touch. Posted by Tova at 9:41 AM

Sri Aurobindo's Action, Kolkata

Thank you Tusar, I could get to know something about UGK- so many things in the world, so many ideas and opinions but his work we cannot call supramental descent or supramental, at least UGK did not utter that word. The other things as I have already written in your blog. You may if you like publish it for further reading and opinion of others.
Sri Aurobindo's Action, Kolkata which was defunct, has now been reopened by another group and their annual conference is going to be held a month hence. Regards, Aju Mukhopadhyay 26-Jun-2007 17:40 8:34 AM

Far too intense to cope with as a continuous read

“If my life deserved an autobiography it would be called ‘Merits of a misguided youth’,” says Anil Rao, chairman and managing director, Pest Control India. But while this paper may not be the best forum to probe that confessionary strain further, his reading habits certainly are...
Or for entirely different reasons — Sri Aurobindo’s works, which though “erudite and reflective”, he says, “are far too intense to cope with as a continuous read”... His current darling is Richard Dawkins, who as an agnostic, rationalist and scientific thinker and writer, he’d like to believe, is a kindred spirit. He is currently reading his The God Delusion.
