date 18 August 2008 06:25 subject Visit to Sri Aurobindo's Cell in the Presidency Jail, Kolkata.

On 15th August, 2008 one had the rare privilege of visiting the Cell in the Presidency Jail at Kolkata where Sri Aurobindo was held by the Britishers in the year 1908. The Jail authorities had, however, limited the number of visitors to the Cell to 25 this year as against 200-300 two years back, reportedly due to security reasons. Since this was the centenary of that great occasion some special celebration was expected to be held inside the Jail premises and outside as well.

But one was stunned to find the Cell already converted into a temple, namely, "Sri Aurobindo Mandir" and normal pujas/rituals, as we find in traditional temples taking place there. Will Sri Aurobindo Bhavan at Kolkata or Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust, Pondicherry kindly take up the matter?
