The Antinomy of the Ultimate and the Other Sri Aurobindo deals with this antinomy when speaking of the One or God or Being that when one talks about creation, that is the creator and the thing created, or when one talks about the One or God or Being and the seeming multiplicity of the world or when one talks about karma and the void as in Buddhism or when one talks about karma and the One or God or Being, one only needs to think of a candle and its flame and its effluence of heat and warmth. A worldwide following
On the subject of rambling, I finally managed to visit Pondycherry last weekend. It was a gruelling 5 hour journey and I left Vellore at 6am. On arrival, first impressions were those of yet another south indian city, however a walk across a canal that divided the old colonial town into a Hindu Ville Noire and a White Ville Blanche, quickly and dramatically revealed that that ancient boundary had not yet evaporated. The 'Ville blanche' closer to the sea was cleaner, less crowded and had beautiful colonial whitewashed building dotted about the well marked streets carrying famililar names of old french governors and political figures (familiar because the same names took an active part in the story of Mauritius e.g Mahe de Labourdonnais, whose statue is on the waterfront, Dupleix, etc). The other dominating feature of the town is the omnipresence of the Aurobindo movement. Sri Aurbindo Ghose (b.1872-1950, a King's college, Cambridge graduate) fled Calcutta under British Raj, against which he had actively fought before turning into a philosopher/sage/spiritualist, and settled in Pondy. He seems to have a worldwide following and there is an Ashram set up by him in Pondy which receives visitors and followers from the word over. I stayed at one of the Ashram guesthouses, which had a beautiful location right in from of the sea. The food in some of the French-Indian restaurants was excellent. How much support does the community provide to those who want to understand the spiritual foundations of Auroville and the nature of the integral yoga?
Mother stressed that it was important that the Aurovilians have a good knowledge of the writings of Sri Aurobindo. Consequently, in the early years certain Ashramites - including M.P.Pandit, Amal Kiran, Nirodbaran, Aravinda Basu and Udar Pinto - came regularly to Auroville to speak about Sri Aurobindo and Mother. The talks, which were held in venues like Last School amphitheatre and the Matrimandir Camp, were well-attended and lively. However, in 1979 they stopped. Why?
Most obviously it was because of increasing difficulties with the Sri Aurobindo Society (S.A.S.) and the Ashram. Some of the Aurovilians wanted to break links with the Ashram because they felt it had 'betrayed' Auroville by not supporting it in its struggles against the S.A.S., and because it was believed to be victimising Satprem for his efforts to publish The Agenda. As more and more of The Agenda was published, some of Mother's comments also appeared to support Satprem's assertion that the Ashram was "finished", and that Aurovilians had henceforth to walk their own spiritual path. Underlying this was the sense that the age of gurus and religions was over, that Mother had announced the birth of a new world which superceded all that went before, and that now one only needed to open oneself to and work with the force in order to progress.
This fitted well with the spirit of that time, for in Auroville it was a time of spontaneous action and of the rejection of established modes of thinking and authority ("too mental" was one of the devastating put-downs of that period). The Auroville schools remained shut (although a few small-scale educational experiments continued) and some of the books in the Auroville library were burned.
By the early 1980s, however, it was clear that there was a cost to this radical clearing of the decks. Many children were receiving no education and, as the political situation stabilized and energy turned again towards building the township, it became evident that very few Aurovilians really understood what Mother had intended for the detailed organization of the community. There was also growing concern that not only Newcomers but also many Aurovilians lacked a basic understanding of the Integral Yoga and of the significance of Mother's intentions for Auroville.
Consequently, along with the re-establishment of formal education in 1984, there was a new movement of research and documentation. For example, one of the first tasks of the newly-established Laboratory of Evolution (LoE) was to make compilations of the texts of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother on topics like Integral Yoga, the psychic being and the 'Avatar's Model Town'. It also built up a library which includes not only works of Sri Aurobindo, Mother and their followers, but also texts on related fields like the new physics and alternative approaches in health and healing. "In this way," explains Bhaga who coordinates activities at the Laboratory of Evolution, "the LoE has become a bridge between the yoga as practised in Auroville and what is happening regarding evolution in the larger world, about which we still know far too little." It's an approach which has had its critics, notably those who believe that the yoga of Sri Aurobindo and Mother is unique and cannot be explained by or compared to any other path. There also remains a deep suspicion among some Aurovilians of what is perceived to be 'New Age' homogenization and superficiality. However Bhaga has seen a definite change in the past two years, with far more people coming to borrow books not only on the yoga but also on allied movements.

By the early 1990s the somewhat strained relationship between Auroville and the Ashram was beginning to ease. Crucially, the completion of the inner chamber of Matrimandir drew Ashramites to the structure which many had worked on in the early years. At the same time, the reintegration of the so-called 'neutrals' (Aurovilians who had favoured dialogue with the SAS without being of that party) back into the community also facilitated a greater interaction with Ashramites, for many of these Aurovilians had retained strong links with individual Ashramites.
The interactions, however, remained informal, and while senior Ashramites like Champaklal and Nirodbaran visited Matrimandir and Aurovilian friends, they did not give talks. The turning-point came in 1994 when Nirodbaran was invited to Pitanga Hall to speak about his recollections of Sri Aurobindo. The deeply-felt and enthusiastic response of the Aurovilians to his talk made it obvious that there was a tremendous thirst not only for more knowledge, but also for increased contact with those who, like Nirodbaran, had had direct experience of Sri Aurobindo and Mother. 1994 was also the year the Savitri Study group began meeting regularly, and this was to become the seed of the Savitri Bhavan project.
Today there are regular well-attended classes and talks at Savitri Bhavan on 'Savitri', 'The Life Divine' and other works by Sri Aurobindo and Mother, given by both Aurovilians and Ashramites like Dr. Ananda Reddy, Dr. Nadkarni and Sraddhalu. The Welcoming Group, which organizes introduction weeks for Newcomers, always includes a session on the spiritual foundations of Auroville, while the Auroville Library, the Laboratory of Evolution and the House of Mother's Agenda continue to loan out books and tapes and mount mini-exhibitions on topics related to the yoga. There is even a new service which offers to make compilations on demand of any aspect of Auroville and the yoga.
In this sense one can say that the community is, once again, taking up the responsibility of disseminating knowledge about the yoga to all who are interested. However, important lacunae remain. Many of the local villagers who join Auroville are illiterate or semi-literate and have little or no knowledge of the yoga or the purpose of Auroville. This is not easily remedied as there are very few easy-to-read books in Tamil on the yoga (and the ones that do exist are not widely distributed) and there are no regular presentations on the yoga in the Tamil language.
Then, again, the larger question of how far one needs to study the yoga in order to become an effective instrument remains unresolved. One reason why there is not more widespread study in the community of Sri Aurobindo and Mother is that some Aurovilians seem to assume that merely to live in Auroville is to be on the royal road to transformation.

Bhaga, who makes presentations to newcomers on the spiritual foundations of Auroville, sounds an additional note of caution. "We must beware of turning Sri Aurobindo and Mother into a religion. The world is not interested in us adoring something, but in our demonstrating that we are evolving. We need knowledge but, above all, we need to make it living." Dear Friends, Savitri Bhavan team-members particularly..
We were very happy to receive your invitation, and share your happiness at the completion of the first section of the complex, your successful endeavour. It reminds me of the year when you invited me to lay the Foundation Stone of the Savitri Bhavan. This time the Bhavan has become a building, and once again I have the honour of inaugurating it ... because I was 'the scribe of Savitri' - as it says here on the invitation. But I'm not sure what a scribe has to do with the inauguration. The answer may follow, if I have found the right one.
Some of you may be curious to know - here on the invitation it mentions Dr. Nirodbaran. So what has Dr. Nirodbaran got to do with the scribe? I remember when I first came to meet Sri Aurobindo as a doctor, after his accident: he said, "Nirod is no doctor to me. He has come to serve me." Those were his very words. How I have served, well or ill, I don't know who will judge. But I have done my best, in spite of many pitfalls and errors.
Now we come to the next step, when I became a scribe. It happened because, as you know, after all his voluminous writing Sri Aurobindo's eyesight was failing. He could not see properly, he could not see even the big clock on the wall. So then Mother came to the rescue as she always does and said, "Nirod will help you. You will dictate and Nirod will write now." I don't think she used the word scribe. So from then on, Sri Aurobindo used to dictate, I would write down his words, copy them, and then the mater would go to Nolinida, to make a fair copy or to type. This was the procedure. I have written about all this [in Twelve Years with Sri Aurobindo], but still quite a number of you may not know all these interesting details.) And then when it was almost finished, Sri Aurobindo asked me, if I remember correctly, "Is there anything more to be done?" I answered, "Yes - the Book of Death." He said, "That we shall see later." That is the way in which, avoiding the straight answer, he kept us in suspense. But he knew that he would not see it again: whatever remained, remained.
This is what he has done. And this are the two things he has said about me: first "He has come to serve me"; and second "Nirod is no doctor to me."
So doctoring I did, scribe I have also been, in the best way I could. I have the satisfaction, whatever anyone may say, that I have done the scribing to the best of my capacity. Today you know, there is a big storm going on in India: people are saying that the sanctity of Savitri has been lost, because we have interfered here and there. You know what is happening, but we don't care for it. We have done our work, and we are responsible to the Mother and to Sri Aurobindo. This is the way the thing has been done. That is all I have to say.
I am very happy to see that a large number of people have responded to the invitation from these wonderful workers, very sincere people, who have done their best, so that as we can see in a very short time the Savitri Bhavan is coming up. And there is no doubt about it that the Savitri Bhavan will go on growing, and soon we shall all be very happy to receive again another invitation in four or five years time. This was one of the most difficult periods of my life
In Hitler and his God - The Background to the Hitler Phenomenon, author Georges van Vrekhem deals with these questions. “I chose to write this book because of Sri Aurobindo's and The Mother's involvement in this war,” says Van Vrekhem. “In my earlier book Beyond Man – The Life and Work of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, I had written a chapter about it, but as the main theme was different, I had no opportunity to properly research this aspect of their work. But had I known what it would involve, I might have chosen a different topic.” He refers to the the 3½ years of study, the more than 500 books he read in five different languages, and the 1½ years he spent writing a text of more than 1500 pages and then reducing it to the present book's 700. Recalls Van Vrekhem, “This was one of the most difficult periods of my life, living day in day out in the presence of Hitler, of concentration camps and demonic deeds, of torture and war. In these five years I had many nightmares.”

A huge gold-plated golfball-shaped temple
Our first stop was at Pondycherry which has been under french rule and might be the only place where you can observe Indians playing Boules... Close by is the town of Auroville, founded in 1968 to become a place of peaceful living that doesn't belong to any nation, but to "humanity itself". The people (from around 40 nations) who live there are dedicated to eco-friendly, coexisting living and research and one aim of the whole project ist to hasten the evolution and become the breeding place of a new kind of human being, a superhuman so to speak, with extraordinary spritual powers. Kind of scary when seen in relation to the biblical book of revelation, also speeking about a man of extraordinary power who will become the world leader and will guide humanity in a global disaster. The philosophy of this future city is based on the writings of an indian guru, Sri Aurobindo, who was also the namegiver of Auroville. The "soul" of the city is a big meditation room inside of a huge gold-plated golfball-shaped temple. Pain in the spine to a diamond-mine
Tuesday, October 10, 2006 Sri Aurobindo Society Stumbled upon a book edited by A S Dalal on the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and Mother while I was fighting a depressing battle against pain because of my spine problem. It's a goldmine, rather a diamondmine! A day before my surgery I read this following line from the book: The body is cured if it has decided to be cured
And here I am limping back to normalcy without going for the surgery. Pray that I hang on to their grace. Pray that more and more people stumble on to the wisdom Sri Aurobindo and Mother has to offer. May the link to the Sri Aurobindo society travel around. Posted by Ranjan Varma Permalink

Situated in the Himalayas at a height of 7,500 ft, Darjeeling is justly famous for its tea gardens, schools, hotels, toy train track, rock garden, and botanical and zoological gardens...Satyajit Ray shot his Kanchenjunga here because of the fabulous view of this majestic peak above the other snow-capped summits. Other film producers followed suit. On Birch Hill is situated the famous Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, once graced by Pandit Nehru and Everest conqueror Tenzing Norgay. Among the other famous people who left their mark on Darjeeling were Aurobindo Ghosh, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Acharya Jagdish Chandra Bose (much of whose life-long work was done in Darjeeling), Rabindranath Tagore and Sister Nivedita (who died here and was cremated on the hill). Today, Darjeeling holds pride of place with its educational institutions, places of worship, pleasure resorts, fashion centres, hotels Mount Everest and what not!

Calcutta, Nov. 29: The high court today rejected the decision of a private primary teachers' training institute to prevent a married student from attending classes because of her pregnancy and upheld its earlier observation that every mature woman had the right to attain motherhood. Tanusree Halder, 23, sought justice after the authorities of Goksai Aurobindo Sangha Primary Teachers' Training Institute at Chandrakona in West Midnapore, 180 km from Calcutta, decided to strike off her name from the register because she was pregnant. The petitioner is an adult and married. She has every right to attain motherhood. One cannot take away this right from a mature woman by framing rules and regulations, Justice Soumitra Pal said.
The court is hereby directing the principal of the Goksai Aurobindo Sangha Primary Teachers' Training Institute to allow the petitioner to attend her classes in the present session (2005-2006) immediately,? Justice Pal ordered. Tanusree, a resident of Garbeta in West Midnapore, 20 km from the institute, had completed MSc in zoology from Vidyasagar University with first-class marks.

Finally, the Chaltabagan Lohapatty puja won for cleanliness, New Alipore’s Suruchi Sangha for safety precautions and Aikataan, in Selimpur, for opportunities for the children (given for proper facilities like drinking water, whether children are involved with decisions, if children can view the idol with ease…) On Sashthi, 200 children from Prayasam, the Rishi Aurobindo squatter’s colony, near Ultadanga, and children of Salt Lake rickshaw-pullers accompanied the judges for a day of pandal-hopping.

Sri Aurobindo Institute of Education
Those who had participated in The Telegraph Hand in Hand last year were excited to take part the second time. Arnab Das of Sri Aurobindo Institute of Education who received first prize at the sit-and-draw at EB Block Central Government Residential Complex was glad to have won the contest. “This year was an improvement on last year’s when I had come second. We had to draw a village scenery this time. That came easily to me, although I prefer doing portraits.” For this art student who has passed his fourth year of art school with distinction, the contest is a stepping stone to further efforts. The world is worthy of our being in it
Now, instead of a yoga of ascent and “escape” from the world, I practice a yoga of descent and engagement with the world. This is now much more consistent with the Judeo-Christian view, which maintains that the world is worthy of our being in it, even if not of it. But it is also entirely consistent with Sri Aurobindo’s yoga, which picks up where the old yogas leave off. Unity, Mutuality, and, Harmony
The two-day annual conference of the Sri Aurobindo Society (Hindi speaking areas) was inaugurated this morning by a galaxy of luminaries in a solemn function held in the Sri Aurobindo Bhawan, Noida (UP).
- Shri Om Prakash Dani, Chairman of the Sri Aurobindo Society, Noida Branch welcomed the dignitaries as well as the delegates.
- Shri Vijay Poddar, Chairman of the Sri Aurobindo Society (Hindi speaking areas), emphasized upon the role of Sri Aurobindo’s thought fashioning the future world events. He also introduced the guests and spoke about their specific contributions in furthering this thought movement.
- Shri Hari Shankar Singhania, Chairman, JK Organization made an impassioned appeal to wake up to the immortal voice of Sri Aurobindo in order to serve the cause of Eternal India.
- Dr Abid Hussain, in his inimitable eloquence, delineated the salient aspects of Sri Aurobindo’s life to bring home the point how important is his message for the future of humanity.
- Dr L.M. Singhvi, nostalgically, recalled his association with Shri K.M. Munshi and his recent experiences in installing Sri Aurobindo’s statues in three different locales.
- Shri Shivraj Patil, Union Home Minister and the Chief Guest, spoke at length on the focus on Unity in Sri Aurobindo’s thought in contradistinction to the prevailing psychosis centering around an impending clash of civilizations. In a candid but forceful tone he claimed that Sri Aurobindo’s teachings has the power to heal the divisions we confront and bring peace and harmony to the whole humanity.
- His Excellency Shri Triloki Nath Chaturvedi, Governor of Karnataka, who presided over the session, recounted the famous Three madnesses and Five dreams of Sri Aurobindo to highlight how his whole life and thought was dedicated to human emancipation.
- Shri Suresh Chandra Tyagi, Secretary of the Sri Aurobindo Society, Noida Branch, moved the vote of thanks and, very poignantly, invoked The Mother’s Grace too.

On the shelves of Avishkar in Kolkata, at Bombay Stores in Bangalore, at Khadi in Chennai and at African Impressions in New York, the five-petalled symbol is going places. From manure to organic vegetables, from software to architectural services, the `Auroville' brand is beginning to define itself in a growing range of products. And this despite no effort at all at advertising or organised marketing.
Today, Auroville products are retailed only from a handful of outlets across the world. But there is a growing recognition of a style that is distinctly Auroville — a certain something about the packaging, design or in the very idea behind the product that gives its origin away.
Unique products
"It's a very typical taste. Indian objects presented with western aesthetics," says Durgaprasad Pradhan, a business entrepreneur who has worked with various Auroville units for over eight years. "If it's Auroville it's different! The community consists of people from all over the world, and the idea behind each product is a unique mix of cultures," says Ashok Grinde, proprietor of Grinde's, a retail outlet in Pondicherry. One of the first stores to stock Auroville products, primarily farm fresh vegetables, Grinde's has seen the range of goods "increase many fold." Today, products made in Auroville are stocked in outlets such as Ahumcaara and Amethyst and Naturally Auroville in Chennai. But they are also becoming available in far-flung places such as Goa and Ooty.
We must have a marketing body: PREMA
Twenty-nine years ago when Maroma, one of Auroville's oldest commercial units, began making agarbatis in twelve fragrances there was no recognition of Brand Auroville. Today, it makes joss sticks with more than seventy fragrances, products that have become associated in the public mind with Auroville. Maroma does candles, aromatic oils, a recently launched body care range and exports to more than 25 countries.
Auroville may not strictly be a brand, but the people who live in this experimental township near Pondicherry, are not going to let others exploit it.
When a Chennai based mineral water company used `Auroville' on its bottles, it was taken to court by the Auroville Board of Commerce (ABC). Apparently, the folk who live there believe that the brand is worth fighting for.
Marketing body
Auromode, a garment exporter, notches up annual exports worth crores. When Prema started this line of clothing in 1982, "Auroville was not organised" as a marketing body. It still isn't, but Prema believes that Auroville must have one of its own. "You cannot create, produce and market at the same time," she says. "A body which represents us as one group of producers would be a great help."
If "the universal city" has no advertising or marketing department, it is partly because not all business ventures here are about making money.
Based on the Mother's vision for this international township, an "ideal place" where "money would be no more the sovereign lord," they are required to give a minimum of 33 per cent of their profits to Auroville Foundation.
Most contribute nearly 50 per cent, more than what they can afford says Alok of Cuppa Chai, which sells herbal teas.

Shopowner Grinde says that for instance, jam from Auroville is invariably made with sugarcane sourced from organic farms, something that makes it much more expensive. "It is this attention to detail that make Auroville products special. It also makes them a little more costly," he says.

Another reason for the pricing is economies of scale. The Auroville Board of Commerce (ABC) encourages units to stay small, limiting the number of workers to 50. Every unit also pays employee benefits, even if there is just one name on the rolls. Higher manufacturing costs and self-imposed quality standards makes Auroville an upmarket brand. "We have to remain niche players. The pricing only reflects our quality, " says Laura, CEO of Maroma. Meeting higher standards requires extra initiative. For example, Maroma has chosen to make its products compliant of the guidelines laid down by the IFRA (the International Fragrance Association), sending each new fragrance to be tested and certified at a lab in Chennai. The commercial units have not only helped Auroville, but also a long list of happy customers by introducing unusual products such as jicama, passion fruit, organic produce, herbal soap and even naturally perfumed sand grains. It's hard to put a description on what the Auroville brand is all about. Some say it is about being exotic, others that it about being natural and yet others that it is about being chic. Aurobindo Ghose was a multifaceted person. He was a freedom fighter, poet, scholar, yogi and philosopher. He spent his life working towards the cause of India’s freedom, and for further evolution of life on earth.
Sri Aurobindo Ghosh was born on August 15, 1872 at Calcutta. His father was Krishnadhan and his mother was Swamalata. Aurobindo Ghose had an impressive lineage. Raj Narayan Bose, an acknowledged leader in Bengali literature, and the grandfather of Indian nationalism was Sri Aurobindo’s maternal grandfather. Aurobindo Ghosh owes not only his rich spiritual nature, but even his very superior literary capacity, to his mother’s line. His father was an M.D. from England.
When Sri Aurobindo was five years old, he was sent to Loretto Convent School at Darjeeling. Two years later in 1879, Aurobindo Ghose, was sent to England along with his brothers for higher studies. Aurobindo completed his schooling from St. Paul’s in London. In 1890, at the age of eighteen, Sri Aurobindo got admission into Cambridge. Here, he distinguished himself as a student of European classics. To comply with the wish of his father, Sri Aurobindo Ghose also applied for the ICS while at Cambridge. He passed the Indian Civil Service Examination with great credit in 1890. He, however, failed to stand the required test in horsemanship and hence was not allowed to enter the Covenantal Service of the Indian Government.
In 1893, Aurobindo Ghose, returned to India, and became the Vice-principal of the State college in Baroda. He drew a salary of Rs.750/-. He was held in great respect by the Maharaja of Baroda. Aurobindo was an accomplished scholar in Greek and Latin. From 1893 to 1906 he extensively studied Sanskrit, Bengali literature, Philosophy and Political Science.
In 1906, in the wake of partition of Bengal, resigned his job and joined the Bengal National College on a salary of Rs.150/-. He plunged headlong into the revolutionary movement. Aurobindo Ghose played a leading role in India’s freedom struggle from 1908. Sri Aurobindo Ghosh was one of the pioneers of political awakening in India. He edited the English daily Bande Mataram and wrote fearless and pointed editorials. He openly advocated the boycott of British goods, British courts and everything British. He asked the people to prepare themselves for passive resistance.
The famous Alipore Bomb Case proved to be a turning point in Sri Aurobindo Ghosh’s life. For a year Aurobindo was an undertrial prisoner in solitary confinement in the Alipore Central Jail. It was in a dingy cell of the Alipore Jail that he dreamt the dream of his future life, the divine mission ordained for him by God. He utilized this period of incarceration for an intense study and practice of the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. Chittaranjan Das defended Sri Aurobindo, who was acquitted after a memorable trial.
During his time in prison, Aurobindo Ghosh, had developed interest in yoga and meditation. After his release he started practicing pranayama and meditation. Sri Aurobindo Ghose migrated from Calcutta to Pondicherry in 1910. At Pondicherry, he stayed at a friend’s place. At first, he lived there with four or five companions. Gradually the number of members increased and an Ashram was founded.
In 1914 after four years of concentrated yoga at Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo launched Arya, a 64 page monthly review. For the next six and a half years this became the vehicle for most of his most important writings, which appeared in serialised form. These included Essays on The Gita, The Secret of The Veda, Hymns to the Mystic Fire, The Upanishads, The Foundations of Indian Culture, War and Self-determination, The Human Cycle, The Ideal of Human Unity, and The Future Poetry. In 1926, Sri Aurobindo Ghose retired from public life.
Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy is based on facts, experience and personal realisations and on having the vision of a seer or Rishi. Aurobindo’s spirituality was inseparably united with reason. The goal of Sri Aurobindo was not merely the liberation of the individual from the chain that fetters him and realization of the self, but to work out the will of the Divine in the world, to effect a spiritual transformation and to bring down the divine nature and a divine life into the mental, vital and physical nature and life of humanity.

The poll was conducted among those in the 18-35 age groups, and their overwhelming preference for India was across religious and gender divides.

Remember what PM Manmohan said in Oxford Uniersity. He appreciated there British Rule in India. Congress followed Pope to oppose forcefully conversion bill.
Sri Aurobindo was twenty-one when he wrote a series of nine articles, “New Lamps for Old”:

Now it is stepping religious head counting and reservation. ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’ slogal banned by Congress Govt of J & K, Now its Congress CM and CPI(M) wants pardon to Afzal.
