Puducherry, Aurobindo Ashram told to strengthen security

Police come out with a series of suggestions

PUDUCHERRY: In a recent communication to authorities of the Aurobindo Ashram, the police have suggested several permanent measures to strengthen security in and around the premises to deal with any terrorist attacks.

The police have stressed the need to restrict the entry of vehicles to Marine Street in front of the Ashram main building by placing movable barricades at the junctions of Manakula Vinayagar Koil Street and Rue Francois Street. Similarly, entry of vehicles to Saint Gilles Street behind the ashram main building should be restricted. The authorities have been asked to extend the coverage of Closed Circuit Television Cameras in the Ashram so as to cover the entire building. A control room should be set up to monitor the footage.

The recording should be stored in a database with backup facility for three years. The police have also urged the ashram to install metal detectors at the main gate. They have also suggested deployment of volunteers for surveillance.

Similar security arrangements should be made at the Ashram guest houses, dining hall and other institutions maintained by them. The security measures should be implemented at the earliest.

Notice board informing the devotees about the security arrangements should be displayed. Visitors should be informed that they are under electronic surveillance, the communication stated.
