Sri Aurobindo himself experienced this phenomenon and lamented that while Indian Muslims had the advantage of a Pan-national identity and could look beyond India’s shores for both political and spiritual succor and inspiration, the Hindus knew only the Indian nation as its motherland and holyland and could not afford its vivisection at any cost... Syed Ahmed emerges as a crypto Islamic fundamentalist because his intention was to utilize the influence of the British civilization to emerge stronger against the Hindu. When the time would come for the British to leave, the Muslims buoyed with their new found strength would run riot against the deprecated Hindus and elevate themselves to lordship again, just like the good old days. Almost an entirely antithetical position is found in his contemporary Bankim Chandra’s writings. In the Anandamatha after the Hindus have decimated the decadent Muslims, the Hindus surrender against the British. For the British in India represents a necessary intervention in history, from whom Hindus must imbibe and learn in order to purge Hinduism of its accumulated evil tendencies over the ages which were responsible for their backwardness while restoring the Hindu religion to its pristine and original glory. Both Syed Ahmed and Bankim understood the British to be the vital force for modernization of their respective religious communities in order to script a decisive victory in the not so distant future against their eternal foe.
