The Literary Genius of the Veda and the Upanishads: A Comparison

Both are great works of literature. But, I confess to you, the Veda is far tougher to dive into and get one’s arms around

The Veda is dense, complex, intricate, symbolic and experiential. It has to be lived

The Upanishads can be understood with a subtle mind. They can be appreciated without the fullest understanding

As literature, appreciating the Vedic music, Siksa or chanting, Nirukta, is a gorgeous experience but takes a lot longer and is a lot harder. Upanishads are an allowance to the mere mortals and literary critics of our new age. The Gita is an attempt to make it even simpler and practical

The Veda is like living with the Super-humans of literature and spirituality. The Upanishads are a literary concession and allowance so that we can go to the gym, get stronger and muscle up. At least, this is my impression from a literary perspective. Please feel free to disagree

The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Isha 2 Karma

कुर्वन्नेवेह कर्माणि is the first pada. Kurvan + eva + iha or Only performing this

Performing what? Karmani or actions

Sankara says these actions are the ritualistic actions of the Yajna. Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo say the karma here is all actions. In the spirit of the Isha Upanishad, the latter is more justified.

Even the great Sankara here had difficulty with the Isha Upanishad because the Isha is all inclusive, life affirming and says that Isha is in everything. No sannyasa is necessary. Realizing this, renounce everything, and in that spirit, enjoy everything by that renunciation and do your work settled in this understanding.

What a grand integral view! We come to this understanding later in the Bhagavad Gita, which is Upanishadic at its core

The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Isha 2 The Inner

एवं त्वयि or Thus, in you

The third pada begins with the curious term in.

This is a unique Sanskrit approach not usually seen with other languages

In Sanskrit, the inner life and space becomes paramount. And the way to do is to use the saptami vibhakti which indicates in or on, the adhikarana

I love what is within you or who you are within. You are not an object but a unique mysterious space that is not visible by senses and is unknown

I love what is within you. Not just you as a name and form or as an object

Thus, in you. This becomes a beautiful construct showing us the spiritual life of the seeker

The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Isha 2 Jijivishet

जिजीविषेच्छतं समाः ।

Jijivishet + shatam

The second pada is interesting and a typical Indic approach. It says aspire to live a hundred years. Why hundred?

Hundred is symbolic of poornata, completeness, a full life. The ancient Indic concept of four ashrams, brahmacharya, grihastha, vaanaprastha and sannyasa, that are prescribed for the various stages of life as one grows and matures, is relevant here

But more, numbers in the Vedic context are symbols reflecting the multiverse we live in and are. And hundred itself becomes a number and a precise goal that holds within it all the possible numbers of the human life on earth.

Why aspire even as you give up? This is again the beauty of Vedic life. Give up everything to the Ishvara, then live with intensity, joy, love and mangalam. Thus, one lives integrally or completely. Neither stoicism, nor hedonism, yet a state that goes beyond into divyata and roopantarana

The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Isha 2

कुर्वन्नेवेह कर्माणि जिजीविषेच्छतं समाः ।

एवं त्वयि नान्यथेतोऽस्ति न कर्म लिप्यते नरे ॥

Here, something very interesting is said, full of complex confidence in pada 3. This is the only way. No other way exists

In English it is called a litotes. Two double negatives. In Sanskrit grammar the rule is

द्वौ नञौ प्रकृतमर्थं गमयतः" (Dvau nañau prakṛtam-arthaṃ gamayataḥ)

Translation: "Two negatives restore the original positive meaning."

This is also known as arthapatti, presumption or postulation from situations or circumstances in nyaya. In rhetoric, this would be akshepa alankara or hinting through denial.

But with what serenity this is said by the teacher. I have seen all other options. Take this from me. There is no way other than this. Na + anyatha + itah +asti

What a beautiful settled understanding! We will come to the understanding of Sankara which is at odds with Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo soon, which is very educational
