Study of the Faculties of Human Consciousness
It is important to first study our individual faculties of consciousness (including the senses). Here we can learn how we actually see, hear, speak, think, feel etc., and also how we could use these senses more effectively. Courses such as: "How to Think and to be conscious in our thoughts", "How to Speak and to be conscious in speech", "How to improve visual memory", "How to improve mental concentration" etc., could offer interesting explorations into the re-discovery of the senses. The major objective of these studies is to train our consciousness to act within its faculties. This type of approach has its roots in Vedanta where the cognitive faculties (to see, to think, to hear, to speak, to breath and to touch) were seen as the primary functions of consciousness. Such an approach to our faculties sheds some light on the profundities of their nature. The major subjects of the Humanities also bear their own distinct features which can be identified as those belonging to a particular faculty of consciousness.cont...cont... Yoga is nothing but practical Psychology... Andrew Cohen and the Road to Legitimacy Beyond Growth written by Joseph Gelfer on December 10th, 2009
The only shift in focus was that Cohen moved to distinguish himself from other spiritual teachers (of meditation, non-duality and so on), noting how he was one of only “a few” teachers focusing on evolution as a guiding spiritual principle (which is hardly new given the likes of Teilhard de Chardin and Sri Aurobindo). In this session we started to see a few glimpses of Cohen’s infamous “rude boy” style: cutting people’s questions with a short “yes” or “no” answer, being slightly edgier.

Sri Aurobindo saw Darwinism as a stepping stone to crass materialism and socialism

Charles Darwin showed interest in Indian biodiversity: Book Daily News & Analysis - Mumbai, India

While Vivekananda approached "Darwinism" with a constructive but critical outlook, Aurobindo was a trenchant critic of the scientist's theory of evolution ...

According to experts on Darwin, his Origin of species.. and its sequel The Descent of Man have many references to India that he gathered from various sources, including the Curator of Asiatic Society, Edward Blyth, a multi-faceted scholar.

While Vivekananda approached "Darwinism" with a constructive but critical outlook, Aurobindo was a trenchant critic of the scientist's theory of evolution, Pillai observes. Thiruvananthapruam, Dec 10 (PTI)

Darwin showed interest in Indian biodiversity: Book Deccan Herald - Bangalore, India

Vivekananda, however, said it was difficult for him to accept Darwin’s theory as the final word on evolution and said ancient Indian sages had discussed the subject in their works like the "Samkhya darshan" of Kapila, Pillai said in his book.

However, Aurobindo was persistent in his criticism of Darwinism, which he saw as a stepping stone to "crass materialism" and socialism, it said."

The aim of both Vivekananda and Aurobindo could have been to establish that the concept of evolution was nothing new to ancient Indian philosophers. But it is clear that both of them had studied Darwin deeply and thought about the far-reaching impact of his theory", Pillai noted.

Darwinism had its references not only in the works of the torch-bearers of Indian renaissance, but also in the 19th century literary works, Pillai points out.

Sri Aurobindo's yoga technique is unique

Sri Aurobindo
The Yogi of Divine Life
Aju Mukhopadhyay
Published by AuthorsPress Price Rs.300
Publishers of Scholarly Books New Delhi (India) From the blurb:

This book is not a traditional philosophical treatise presenting Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy though it tells at good length about his philosophy. It is mainly a work telling the story of his life as a spiritual being; how he became a philosopher, how he was entirely different from his predecessors, how his yoga technique was developed and how mankind may be benefited by his teachings. But this is not a complete biography. It is a book telling about the spiritualism, philosophy and yoga of Sri Aurobindo.

One Cʘsmos: The First Oecumeaningful Council By Gagdad Bob Clearly, in the Christian conception, O is not analogous to the "static Brahman" of Vedanta -- which, by the way, Aurobindo experienced and found to be valid as far as it goes. But he went beyond this, to conclude that what we might call the "creative word" was part of a deeper process involving the interplay of the dynamic and static aspects of Brahman.
