People in Bengal’s villages know nothing about Sri Aurobindo’s life and teachings

Sir, ~ I thank The Statesman for publishing the “100 years ago today” (12 April) about the Alipore trial. Aurobindo took part in the freedom movement long before Mahatma Gandhi and was in the Alipore jail as an undertrial.

In a letter to me dated 19 August 1987, Rajiv Gandhi wrote: “Sri Aurobindo’s life and teachings continue to be of relevance today. He will remembered on Independence Day with respect and gratefulness.”

But a majority of the people in Bengal’s villages know nothing about Sri Aurobindo’s life and teachings, though his name should be a source of inspiration for all. ~ Yours, etc., Sankar Chattopadhyay, Kolkata, 13 April. The Statesman Be Better Informed letters to the editor
