I do not know how Peter Heehs can suggest disengaging from the tenets of Hinduism

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Savitri Era Religion has nothing to do with the Hi...":

I do not know how, in the face of Sri Aurobindo’s own comments, Peter Heehs can suggest disengaging Sri Aurobindo, the Mother and Thea’s work from the tenets of Hinduism. Has he not read his own statement on the matter????

“…Hinduism, which is the most skeptical and the most believing of all, the most skeptical because it has questioned and experimented the most, the most believing because it has the deepest experience and the most varied and positive spiritual knowledge, — that wider Hinduism which is not a dogma or combination of dogmas but a law of life, which is not a social framework but the spirit of a past and future social evolution, which rejects nothing but insists on testing and experiencing everything and when tested and experienced turning it to the soul's uses, in this Hinduism we find the basis of the future world-religion.” (Source: Aurobindo’s Karmayogin: Political Writings And Speeches - 1909-1910: Chapter: The Ideal of Karmayogin)

This is yet another example of a lack of knowledge of the true nature and spirit of Sri Aurobindo’s, the Mother’s and Thea’s work and mission. Central to their work is the restoration of the Sanatana Dharma. This is the exclusive mission of the Avatar in his periodic appearance on the Earth. Part of that restoration includes a clear understanding of the symbolism preserved in the architecture of the Hindu temple and the cosmological significance of its ritual celebrations. But then how can we expect those who have rejected the Mother’s own temple to understand these subtleties. The following article should shed some light on this important matter. R.E. Wilkinsonrobtw@sprynet.com

In a recent letter to the New Indian Express, Mar. 9, 2008, (See below) Swami Dayananda wrote of a new rapprochement between Hindu and Jewish religious leaders. This historic meeting, wrote Swami Dayananda, emphasized and illustrated the importance of honest dialogue between two religious traditions to resolve seemingly irresolvable differences. At issue was the question of Hindu worship of "Gods" and "Idols" which, for centuries, Jewish theologians have found irreconcilable with their own traditions which prohibit idolatry. While one cannot doubt Swami-ji's sincere attempt at honest dialog, he has overlooked the fact that the focus on Idols in Hinduism, after the Vedic Age with its emphasis on sacred geometric forms is one of the most inspiring aspects of the Sanatana Dharma. In her reply to Swami Dayananda, Thea (Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet) explains the deeper meaning behind these sacred forms and why Hindus should not so readily capitulate to the criticisms of other beliefs.

Pournaprema, granddaughter of The Mother passes

e-mail: info@newindpress.com SOUTHERN NEWS - TAMIL NADU Mar 15, 2008
Granddaughter of Mother passes away Saturday March 15 2008 09:15 IST

PUDUCHERRY: Pournaprema (77), granddaughter of Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, passed away at 3 am on Friday at her residence on the ashram premises after prolonged illness.

Pournaprema, who was born Francoise Morisset, is survived by son Michel Lemaire. Morisset joined the ashram in the late 50s and was named Pournaprema by the Mother. She used to write books, articles and was engaged in ashram-related literary activities. Pournaprema had been ailing for almost a decade now and was receiving treatment in France and Puducherry. Cremation was held in Karuvadikuppam funeral ground here.

Auroville Matrimandir differs from The Mother's original vision

Re: After 40 yrs, Auroville still going strong by ned on Fri 14 Mar 2008 01:39 PM PDT Profile Permanent Link
Was the Mother really Sri Aurobindo's "disciple"? I think maybe in the very very initial stages she might have been, but otherwise I think he always saw her as his equal and his spiritual co-worker.

Re: Auroville's Landmark 40th Anniversary Celebrations by Lori Tompkins on Fri 14 Mar 2008 06:36 PM PDT Profile Permanent Link
Karan Singh's statement, 'The completion of Matrimandir marked the conversion of the Mother’s vision into a reality,' reads to me like fiction, or like a complete washing over of evidence to the fact that the Mother's vision was not respected and not '[converted] into a reality'. Why claim the Mother's vision was realized when so much of her vision (including the diameter of the inner chamber) was changed by the architects who took control of the project?

Anyway, I wonder how Auroville can truly expect to prosper while washing over the failures made in carrying out the Mother's actual vision for the Inner Chamber of the Matrimandir. Details of how the Auroville Matrimandir differs from the Mother's original vision can be found at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Archives in Pondicherry, in The New Way, Vols. 1 & 2 and online at www.matacom.com

Sri Aurobindo Ashram has been producing a surfeit of rice in recent years

Mud Between My Toes from Sri Aurobindo Ashram — Blogs, Pictures, and more on WordPress by mbjesq

Today was yet another pre-dawn morning. We accompanied the teenage students of the Sri Aurobindo International School to ashram-owned paddy lands, near Ousteri Lake on the Pondicherry – Tamil Nadu border, to harvest sesame (til).
For them, as for us, the outing was a way to experience the basic mechanics of agriculture – or at least one significant part of the process – and remind ourselves from where our food comes. It was also hard work and good fun.

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is largely self-sufficient in producing the food to sustain its 2,500 members, with entirely organic orchards, fields, paddy lands, and dairy operations. Indeed, the ashram has been producing a surfeit of rice in recent years, and has been rotating its paddies to produce non-flood-irrigated crops like groundnut, sun flowers, mustards, and sesame, which are pressed into cooking oils.

Yesterday evening brought an unseasonable storm to Pondicherry, utterly torrential last night, tapering to showers this morning. The sodden paddy fields were good fortune for us in two ways. First, the wet earth made the pulling of the til like butter.
Second, there are few things in life (I won’t enumerate them) as deliciously pleasurable as the mud of a paddy field squishing through your toes.

Fashion and Sri Aurobindo’s vision

Earthy designs & a vision TOI 12 Mar 2008, 0000 hrs IST, MANDVI SHARMA , TNN

Anju Modi and Neha Ahuja (TOI Photo)
“I am a minimalist by nature,” says designer Anju Modi, and that is what her designs are all about this Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. “I like to play around with surface texture, hand-woven fabrics and their unconventional treatment that synthesises the vintage with the contemporary.” Her collection, named Luminosity, is going to have Global Warming as a background for this autumn/winter showcase. There is a use of sheer fluid fabrics in natural colours and Indian designs. There is slight flounce in most of the garments and yet a proper structure has been given to them to bring out the character of the designs. Anju’s show is on Sunday at the WIFW in Pragati Maidan.

“I am a strong believer in Sri Aurobindo’s vision and his thought has inspired this collection,” she says.

Waking and sleep are opportunities

Only when thou hast climbed above thy mind
And liv'st in the calm vastness of the One
Can love be eternal in the eternal Bliss
And love divine replace the human tie.
There is a shrouded law, an austere force:
It bids thee strengthen thy undying spirit;
It offers its severe benignancies
Of work and thought and measured grave delight
As steps to climb to God's far secret heights.
Then is our life a tranquil pilgrimage,
Each year a mile upon the heavenly Way,
Each dawn opens into a larger Light.
Thy acts are thy helpers, all events are signs,
Waking and sleep are opportunities
Given to thee by an immortal Power.

India is well-and-truly bereft of much-of-anything even resembling spiritual awareness

I was somewhat surprised to realize that, in the years I’ve lived in Pondicherry, within a few blocks of this historic building – which plays such an important symbolic role in the lives of so many of my close friends – I had never before been in this place, though it is open daily...

It is quite odd that I find myself living amid so much deeply felt spirituality to which I am so perfectly immune. (It is all the more interesting and ironic to be doing so for much of each year in India, a country that, for all its famous and much-trumpeted ancient experience, is well-and-truly bereft of much-of-anything even resembling spiritual awareness, as most spiritual people would probably define the term. But that is an essay to write – and a fight to pick, no doubt – on another day.) ...

Somehow, my seemingly intractable ignorance hasn’t diminished my curiosity with the subject. I have discovered one thing, though: always take a darshan when you can get one – even when it is with a room. memestream Room Darshan Published 29 February 2008 Art & Culture , Bio , India , Religion, Spiritualism & Other Make-Believe « Bon Fête Auroville
