Deepavali in Puducherry

Chennai, Oct 22: Deepavali, the festival of lights, was celebrated in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with traditional gaiety yesterday. After heralding the day with bursting of crackers at the break of dawn dressed in new clothes, people were later seen visiting temples, greeting each other and presenting boxes of sweets. In Chennai, people dressed in colourful attire, were seen thronging temples and greeting each other.
In Puducherry, thousands of people thronged temples as well as the Sri Aurobindo Ashram on the occasion. The deity of Sri Manakula Vinayakar temple was taken around the main streets of Puducherry as part of the celebrations. Lt Governor Mukut Mithi, Chief Minister N Rangasamy and a host of political leaders extended greetings to the people. (Our Correspondent)
